HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 3968ORIGINAL RESOLUTION NO. 3968 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR GIFT OF RARE CAMELLIA BUSH WHEREAS, the people of Palo Alto always have had a great appreciation and love for trees and gardens; and WHEREAS, in the City of Palo Alto, particular attention has been focused upon general community beautification and the pre- servation of natural beauty; and WHEREAS, the community has recently been given a very special gift -- a camellia, unique in size and beauty, named "Clarke's Red", which stands some 16 feet tall, measures 22 feet across and is more than 100 years old; and WHEREAS, this majestic shrub, which was brought to the City of San Jose and planted there in 1865, was given to the City of Palo Alto by the W. B. Clarke & Company Nursery along with many other rare and beautiful trees and shrubs, several of which are unique in the Bay Area; and WHEREAS, Mr. J. F. Clarke, son of the founder of the W. B. Clarke & Company Nursery, presented these rare specimens to the City because of its love for trees and gardens anC because he wanted them to be placed where many people who would appreciate them could see and enjoy theca; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of all of the people of Palo Alto does hereby extend to Mr. J. F. Clarke and to the W. B. Clarke & Company Nursery its grateful appreciation for these rare and special gifts.
