RESOLUTION NO. 5076
A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF EAST
PALO ALTO AND THE COUNCIL OP THE ctn OF PALO ALTO.
CALIFOR!UA, URGING nlE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE
TO LOCATE ITS PROPOSED MAI.N POST OFFICE F.AST OF THE
BAYSHORE FREEWAY IN OR NEAR EAST PALO ALTO
WHEREAS: 1. The United States Postal Service owns a parcel of
approximately 6.4 acres of land located at West Bayshore Frontage Road
and Loma Ve~de Avenue in the City of Palo Alto;
2. The Pos~al Service has indicated its intention to
construct on said parcel a Palo Alto Main Post Office including carrier
facilities., cuE.tomer services, and the office of the Postmaster;
3. Said facility is proposed to serve the.co:maunities
of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Barron Park, and Stanford University;
4. Construction of said facility would result in clos-
ing the leased facility now operated by the Postal.Service on the east
side of Baysbore Freeway on East Bayshcre Frontage Road north of Emt>arca-
dero Road in the City of Palo Alto;
5. The existing postal facility on E&st S../&hore Frontage
Road and Embarcadero Road is the only postal facility located on the east
side of Baysbore Freeway which provides service to the re~idents of East
Palo Alto;
6. The East Palo Alto Municipal Council desires to main-
tain a postal facility on the east aide of ~y~~ore Freeway for the con-
venience of the residents of East Palo .Al~o;

7. The Council of the City of Palo Alto and the resi-
dents of Palo Alto who liv• in the vicinity of the prop!>aed postal facility
ou West Bayshore Frontage Road are concerned dbout the vehicular traffic
that the proposed facility would introduce into Palo Alto's neighborhoods; and
8. The present facility located on East Bayshore Frontage
Road benefits from superior accessibility to the Bayshore Freeway and to
the major arterials of Palo Alto, including the Oregon Expressway
and is thus a superio~ location for a carrier/dietrib~tion facility;
NOW> THEREFORE, The Municipal Council of East Palo Alto and the Council
of the City of Palo Alto do hereby jointly RESOLVE ae follows:
f.ECTION 1. The United States Postal Service hereby is requested
to review the feasibility of locating the proposed postal facility either at
the present site east of Bayshore Freeway on an exp~dP.d parcel of land or
on another site in East Palo Alto.
SECTION !• The Cotmcils of East Palo Alto and Palo Alto request
the Boards of Supervisors of the Counties of Santa Clara and San Mateo to
join in support of this r~olution •.
SECTION 3. The Council of the City of Palo.Alto reaffi%l88 its
and the East Palo Alto Municipal Council concurs,
position taken in 1969/that the Lama Verde-West Bayshore site is not appro-
priate for a postal facility, and requests that the parcel owned by the
Postal Service be sold on the open market.
SECTION 4: The Clerk of the City of Palo Al.to hereby !a directed
to aend a certified copy of this resolution to:
1. Board of Supervisors, San Mateo County
