HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 9749DocuSign Envelope ID: E897A29B-A9A3-45EE-A52F-781994066040 RESOLUTION 9749 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO HONORING THE INCORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO IN 1894 HONORING THE INCORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO IN 1894 WHEREAS, Leland and Jane Stanford, initially stymied in their attempts to convince the neighboring town of Mayfield to serve as the home for the faculty and students of a university they founded in the memory of their son, Leland Stanford, Jr., subsequently engaged Timothy Hopkins to purchase land and plan the new town site of University Park, later named Palo Alto; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto honors a long history of representative government and citizen engagement in civic affairs; and WHEREAS, in early days as an unincorporated town Palo Alto's public works and roads were governed by the County Board of Supervisors; and WHEREAS, many early residents believed that local governance and ownership of such works as the water utility would benefit the growing population of Palo Alto; and WHEREAS, led by the Palo Alto Improvement Club, residents pressed for incorporation as the route to local governance and municipal provision of water, and later other utilities; and WHEREAS, a vote on April 9, 1894 by (male) residents of Palo Alto approved incorporation 98 to 21 and chose a five-member Board of Trustees; and WHEREAS, on April 16, 1894, papers reporting the results of the election were filed with the State of California; and WHEREAS, on April 21, 1894, state approval of incorporation allowed Palo Alto to become a California city of the sixth class; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto's representative government derives from its incorporation on April 9, 1894.
