EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR OUTSTANDING PUBLIC
SERVICE TO GREG SCHMID AS COUNCIL MEMBER
WHEREAS,former Vice Mayor Greg Schmid was first elected to the Palo Alto City Council in
2008 and reelected in 2013, and served with integrity, wisdom, compassion and a commitment to
thorough analysis and reasoned decision making; Greg embodies both public service and forward
thinking, with four years as a Palo Alto School Board Trustee and decades of economic, social and
demographic forecasting and analysis, including 30-
Future; and
WHEREAS, Greg speaks honestly, incisively and directly to issues and seeks meaningful
outcomes; demonstrates thoughtful judgment; and treats his colleagues, City employees, and the
public with civility and respect; and
WHEREAS,Greg served on the Policy and Services Committee for two years, the Finance
Committee for five years including as Chair, and on the CAO, City/School Liaison and Regional
Housing Mandate Committees; and served the City regionally on the Association of Bay Area
Governments and the Santa Clara County Water District, as well as Liaison to many City
organizations; and
WHEREAS,Greg has relentlessly championed the acquisition, analysis and use of quantitative
data in City policy determination, in areas such as finance, traffic analysis, land-use, nonprofits and
affordable housing; and
WHEREAS,Greg has not only been a tireless advocate for city focus on resident Quality of Life
issues such as traffic, parking, and school enrollment demand, but he has been instrumental in
driving that focus to include consideration of the upstream drivers of those issues, notably the
importance of the jobs-to-employed residents ratio, as well as the long-term growth rate of our
nonresidential space, and our symbiosis with Stanford; and
WHEREAS,
understanding and insight long-term revenue and cost dynamics, and helped the
Council make better informed decisions regarding city fiscal stability; and
WHEREAS,quantitative approach to city policy has inspired
others on Council to ask similar questions and take similar approaches; and
WHEREAS, to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions to achieve sustainability and address climate change.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby
commends the outstanding public service of Greg Schmid and gratefully records both its
appreciation, and the appreciation of the citizens and businesses of this community, for his
meritorious service and commitment as a Palo Alto Council Member.
