ATTACHMENT B
Palo Alto Bicycle Detection at Traffic Signals Project:
This project will provide for the procurement and installation of microwave-based detection units
for deployment at signalized intersections that can distinguish between bicycles and vehicles.
Detecting bicycle-only demand allows for traffic signal timing features that focused on enhancing
bicyclist to be deployed dynamically. Examples of bicycle-focused signal timing features include
longer Minimum Green or Maximum Green timing strategies to assist bicyclists in progressing
through an intersection before· the traffic signal cycles to the next vehicle movement. The
microwave-based detection units will be deployed along high bicycle-use corridors such as Bicycle
Boulevard or Bike Lane corridors.
