Resolution of the Council of the City Of Palo Alto Opposing
Proposition 27 to Eliminate the State Redistricting Commission
WHEREAS, Proposition 27 has qualified for the November 2,2010 Statewide General
Election; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 27 eliminates the 14-memberredistricting commission selected
from an applicant pool picked by government auditors and consolidates authority for establishing
state Assembly, Senate, and Board of Equalization district boundaries with elected State
representatives responsible for drawing congressional districts; and
WHEREAS, this measure returns the responsibility to determine district boundaries of
state offices back to the Legislature and, under this measure, the commission established by voters in
2008 to determine these district boundaries would be eliminated; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 27 would cause reversion of the redistricting process to the
prior practice where politicians met and determined legislative boundaries, creating potential
conflicts of interest; and
WHEREAS, the current Citizens Redistricting Commission must meet in public during
the redistricting process, creating more transparency and public participation.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council ofthe City of Palo Alto does hereby RESOLVE
as follows:
SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Palo Alto by the adoption of this
resolution hereby opposes Proposition 27 on the November 2,2010 ballot.
