HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-03-30 City Council Summary Minutes Special Meeting March 30, 1996 The City Council of the City of Palo Alto met on this date at the Mitchell Park Community Center at 11:45 a.m. PRESENT: Andersen, Fazzino, Huber, McCown, Schneider, Wheeler ABSENT: Kniss, Rosenbaum, Simitian The following members of the Human Relations Commission were present: PRESENT: Blitzer, Guiterrez, Hausser, Indergand, Stone ABSENT: Burroughs, Lovercheck SPECIAL MEETING 1. Study Session re Mayor's Round table Forum on Escalating Rents Mayor Wheeler announced that two public hearings had been held previously. The round table forum was to discuss possible solutions to address escalating rents. There were approximately 140 members of the public present and approximately 14 members of the public addressed the assembly with various issues relative to the topic. Human Relations Commission Chairperson Janet Stone provided background information on the issue of escalating rents from an agency perspective. Senior Assistant Attorney Bill Mayfield presented background information on jurisdictional issues relative to the issue. Various speakers from nonprofit agencies addressed specific areas of concern and interest on behalf of their organizations. The participants separated into four groups and discussed proposed solutions on the issue of escalating rents. The groups then reconvened to the full assembly and presented a summary of the suggestions and solutions from their respective groups.

Mayor Wheeler thanked everyone for their attendance and participation and said that a summary of the meeting would be distributed to Council Members, Human Relations Commission, and the agencies in attendance. She announced a subsequent meeting would be scheduled for the Human Services staff, Human Relations Commission, and agencies to discuss the feasibility of developing an action plan designating specific responsibilities within that plan which would submitted to City Council for future consideration. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 2:40 p.m.
