RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE OF
MICHAEL (MIKE) COBB AS MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBER
WHEREAS, Mike Cobb served the City of Palo Alto as a
Council Member from January 1982 to December 1993 and held the
position of Mayor in 1986 and 1990 and of Vice Mayor in 1985, and
he served as a Member of the Finance Committee from 1983 to 1985,
1987 to 1989, and 1991 to 1993 and as Chairperson in 1984, 1989,
and 1992, and as a Member of the Policy and Services Committee in
1982; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure, Mike Cobb superbly
represented the City of Palo Alto in various roles on local and
regional committees, including but not limited to, the Northern
California Power Agency, the Transmission Agency of Northern
California, League of California Cities --Peninsula Division, the
Economic Outlook Committee, and the East Palo Alto Liaison
Committee; and
WHEREAS, Mike Cobb supported and worked tirelessly on
issues such as setting reasonable limits to commercial and
residential growth; preserving open space; finding regional
solutions for waste disposal, traffic, and growth problems;
maintaining efficient, fiscally sound management of City resources;
assuring that long-term energy needs are met at a reasonable cost;
and maintaining as a top priority Palo Alto's economic future with
respect to viability and vitality to preserve quality City
services, amenities, and programs; and
WHEREAS, Mike Cobb, renowned for his innovation,
strategic planning, and keen insight into the future, initiated the
Futurecast 2001 Committee in 1986, a committee charged with
thinking about Palo Alto's future at the beginning of the
21st Century; and his visions emphasized a different El Camino
Real, a reborn Stanford Research Park, a vibrant California Avenue,
a stronger link with Stanford University, and the importance of
regional cooperation and cultural diversity; and
WHEREAS, Mike Cobb emerged as a dedicated coach of the
Palo Alto Bobby Sox, and his artistic and creative sides showed in
his well-known colorful and comical caricatures of Council Members,
Council Appointed Officers, and others; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto was indeed fortunate to
have Mike Cobb's unending energy, strong leadership, wisdom, and
commitment to preserving the quality of life in Palo Alto.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public
service of Mike Cobb and records its appreciation, as well as the
appreciation of the citizens of the community, for the meritorious

service rendered and contributions made during his 12 years on the
Council.
