RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
HONORING JEAN MCCOWN
AS MAYOR OF PALO ALTO FOR 1993
WHEREAS, Jean McCown served as Mayor of the City of Palo
Alto from January 4, 1993, to December 31, 1993; and
WHEREAS, Jean McCown always demonstrated strong
leadership skills as Mayor at numerous community and regional
events and various City functions such as the Town Hall meeting,
joint meetings with boards and commissions, and meetings with
legislatures; and
WHER3AS, Jean McCown has continued her commitment not
only to preserving the quality of life in Palo Alto but also to
establishing a strong working relationship with East Palo Alto in
that city's endeavor to build a better community and improve its
quality of life; and
WHEREAS, under Jean McCown's leadership as Mayor, the
City of Palo Alto shared with the Cities of East Palo Alto and
Menlo Park the 1993 California Cities Helen Putnam Award for
Excellence Grand Prize for "Operation Safe Streets --The RED Team,"
a program recognized, commended, and supported by the Honorable
Governor Pete Wilson; and
WHEREAS, Jean McCown was instrumental in the meetings to
address issues of concerns regarding the Shoreline Amphitheatre,
which brought about a settlement agreement among Shoreline
Amphitheatre Partners, Bill Graham Presents, Inc., and the City of
Palo Alto; and
WHEREAS, Jean McCown has received recognition and
commendations from her colleagues not only as Mayor but also as the
Delegate to and 1993 Chairperson of the Santa Clara County
Congestion Management Agency, a role in which she provided regional
leadership to reduce automobile congestion and improve air quality;
and
WHEREAS, Jean McCown's "State of the City Address"
focused on the importance of defining Palo Alto as a community and
Palo Alto's vision of the future, and with Palo Alto's Centennial
just around the corner, she addressed the steps to take to build
and strengthen the community to face the challenges the next
century will bring.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records its sincere
appreciation and the appreciation of the community to Jean McCown
for her many services to the City of Palo Alto during her term as
Mayor.
