RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
SUPPORTING THE PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT'S ISSUANCE OF
GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS (MEASURE B)
WHEREAS, most schools in the Palo Alto Unified School
District were built at least 40 years ago and have not had
significant upgrading in years; heating and ventilation systems do
not work, electrical systems are inadequate for new technology,
roofs leak, and bathrooms for children need new plumbing; and
WHEREAS,
earthquake safety
science classrooms
and
all schools
measures, some
are inadequate
need seismic renovations and
need additional classrooms, and
for today's instructional needs;
WHEREAS, in October 1992, a Planning Committee made up of
community members, teachers, parents, and staff was convened to
study school facilities and to make recommendations for their
repair and modernization; and
WHEREAS, in March 1994, the committee recommended a major
renovation effort to stop the continued deterioration of school
facilities, and the Board of Education has since created guidelines
for upgrading every school and placed Measure B on the ballot; and
WHEREAS, Measure B will allow the Palo Alto Unified
School District to sell bonds to provide funds for the repair,
renovation, and maintenance of all district schools including
replacing old and worn electrical systems in classrooms, libraries,
and laboratories; updating science labs; renovating heating and
ventilation systems; replacing worn-out roofs; making seismic
upgrades; and renovating classrooms; and
WHEREAS, our community has a •strong tradition of
supporting quality education; and while other school districts have
been forced to cut essential program services, support from parents
and the community has allowed schools in our district to remain
among the best in the state; and
WHEREAS, all money raised by Measure B is tax deductible,
will be spent at school sites, and will stay in our community to
benefit our community's children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the
City of Palo Alto hereby endorses School Bond Measure B and
strongly urges the community to support Palo Alto Unified School
District's School Bond Measure B on the ballot in the June 6, 1995,
Election.
