RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO
ALTO COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE
OF JOE SIMITIAN AS MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBER
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian was elected to the City Council of
the City of Palo Alto in 1991 and was reelected in 1995, and he
served in the distinguished roles of Mayor in 1995 and Vice Mayor
in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian served as a Member of the Finance
Committee in 1994, as a Member of the Policy and Services Committee
in 1992 and 1996, and as Chairperson of the Policy and Services
Committee in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian paid special attention to the
City's infrastructure needs, and he advocated investment in valued
programs and facilities to ensure their maintenance and strength
throughout Palo Alto's second century; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian forged many creative solutions for
Council's consideration, including the land swap which procured a
site for the Single Room Occupancy Housing Project on Alma Street,
and the challenge grant for expanded Children's Theatre facilities;
and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian consistently supported youth
activities, such as the Children's Theatre Outreach Program and the
City's first Teen Center, and continued to promote a solid
relationship with the Palo Alto Unified School District; and
WHEREAS, during his Council tenure, Joe Simitian provided
creative leadership, fiscal accountability, civic responsibility,
legal expertise, and planning know-how to the City of Palo Alto;
and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian also demonstrated these skills
beyond the borders of Palo Alto as President of the League of
California Cities Peninsula Division and as Delegate and Executive
Board Member of the Santa Clara County Cities Association; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has been fortunate indeed
to have Joe Simitian's outstanding guidance and expertise, and the
City wishes to extend congratulations and best of luck to Joe
Simitian in his new role as the Fifth District Member of the Santa
Clara County Board of Supervisors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the
City of Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public service of
Joe Simitian and gratefully records its appreciation, as well as
the appreciation of the citizens of this community, for the
meritorious service rendered and contributions made during his term
on the Council.
