RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO
ALTO EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO ALL FORMER
MEMBERS OF THE DISABILITY AWARENESS TASK FORCE
FOR OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE
WHEREAS, on October 10, 1996, the Human Relations
Commission voted to sunset the Disability Awareness Task Force; and
WHEREAS, during its 15 -year existence, the Disability
Awareness Task Force distinguished itself for its service to the
City on behalf of people with disabilities who live and/or work in
Palo Alto; and
WHEREAS, the Disability Awareness Task Force made
tremendous strides in raising community awareness of the Americans
with Disabilities Act and in fulfilling its goal of full and equal
participation of citizens with disabilities in all aspects of life;
and
WHEREAS, the Disability Awareness Task Force produced an
award -winning video, "Good Intentions...Mistaken Assumptions,"
created to assist Palo Alto Unified School District teachers with
mainstreaming students with disabilities into their general
education classes; and
WHEREAS, the Disability Awareness Task Force published
two editions of "Getting Around in Palo Alto, an Accessibility
Guide for Residents and Visitors with Physical Restrictions"; and
WHEREAS, the Disability Awareness Task Force has left an
impressive legacy on which the Human Relations Commission will
build, as the City develops new ways to address disability issues
in our community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto acknowledges former
members of the Disability Awareness Task Force as valuable and
credible representatives of issues concerning people with
disabilities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the
City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records and extends its sincere
appreciation and the appreciation of the community to all former
members of the Disability Awareness Task Force for their excellent
service.
