"RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO RALPH ABEL
UPON HIS RETIREMENT
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel served the City of Palo Alto and its
citizens as a member of the Palo Alto Police Department's
Communications Division from November 9, 1964, through December 30,
1995; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel served the Palo Alto community in all
aspects of public safety dispatching by beginning his career as one
of the first dispatchers to be hired when the City of Palo Alto
consolidated Police, Fire, and Utilities communications in the
newly formed Division of Communications under the Administrative
'Services Department; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel worked as a Communicator, Lead
Communicator, Special Projects Communicator, and Acting Operations
Manager; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel was an integral part of the move of
the Communications Center to new City Hall facilities on Hamilton
Avenue in 1970, the start of contractual dispatching services to
Stanford in 1976, the consolidation with the City of Mountain View
Communications to form the North County Emergency Communications
Center in 1977 and the subsequent de -consolidation in 1985, and the.
implementation of Enhanced 9-1-1 service to Palo Alto in 1984; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel was selected as the Palo Alto
"Dispatcher of the Year" in 1985; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel received numerous commendations
during his career for his alertness, responsiveness, and teamwork;
and
WHEREAS, Ralph Abel pursued his 31 -year emergency
services dispatching career with dignity, commitment, dedication,
courtesy, and professionalism.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public-
service of Ralph Abel and records its appreciation, as well as the

appreciation of the citizens of this community, upon his
retirement.
