RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
HONORING JOE SIMITIAN
AS MAYOR OF PALO ALTO FOR 1995
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian served as Mayor of the City of Palo
Alto from January 9, 1995, through January 8, 1996; and
WHEREAS, at the outset of his Mayoralty .and in his State.
of the City Address, Joe Simitian emphasized the need to make tough
choices, to invest in programs and facilities that build community,
and to measure our success at City Hall by the impact we have on
the daily lives of those who live and work in our community; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian's effective leadership brought to
fruition the City's first ever Teen Center, a challenge grant for
Children's Theatre facilities, and unanimous Council support for
School Bond Measure "B"; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian's tenure as Mayor will be
remembered for fiscal responsibility and accountability as
evidenced by adoption of the City's first Mission Driven Budget,
increased infrastructure investment, implementation of savings from
our management review, and a productive audit of the City's bidding
and contracting practices; and
WHEREAS, as Mayor, Joe Simitian played a key role in a
host of eclectic accomplishments during 1995, including the
Downtown Rejuvenation Program, various affordable housing projects,
the Domestic Partners Registry, Real Property Transfer Tax
Exemptions, Smoking Ordinance amendments, an artful resolution to
the great Black and White Ball' controversy, and the illumination
of City Hall Plaza; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian's patience, persistence, and
planning expertise were tested but never bested as he and the
Council went "slogging through" 18 meetings on the Comprehensive
Plan; and
WHEREAS, Joe Simitian's vision and accomplishment helped
lead this City into its second century of prosperity and quality of
life; and

WHEREAS, Joe Simitian currently serves as President of.
the League of California Cities Peninsula Division, ably
representing Peninsula cities on issues of regional concern.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that -the -Council of the
City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records its sincere
appreciation and the appreciation of the community to Joe Simitian
for his many good services to the City of Palo Alto during his term
as Mayor.
