HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO7661RESOLUTION 7661 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO CAPTAIN MICHAEL A. BAKER, NASA ASTRONAUT WHEREAS, in 1977 Michael A. Baker completed flight training and earned his Wings of Gold at Naval Air Station Chase Field in Beeville, Texas; and WHEREAS, Michael A. Baker has over 300 carrier landings to his credit and has logged over 5,000 hours flying time in approximately 50 different types of airplanes, including tactical jets, VSTOL, multi -engine transport, and rotary wing aircraft; and WHEREAS, Michael A. Baker was selected by NASA in June 1985 to become an astronaut in July 1986 upon completion of a one-year training and evaluation program; and WHEREAS, Michael A. Baker has logged 965 hours in space and served as pilot on the STS -43 Mission in 1991 and the STS -52 Mission in 1992 and as mission commander on the STS -68 Mission in 1994 and the STS -81 Mission earlier this year; and WHEREAS, Michael A. Baker made the City of Palo Alto a part of history on the STS -.81 Mission by carrying the City of Palo Alto Fire Department uniform shoulder patch aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records and extends its sincere appreciation to Michael A. Baker for honoring the City of Palo Alto by carrying the Palo Alto Fire Department uniform shoulder patch aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on the STS -81 Mission to the Mir space station.
