RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
HONORING LANIE WHEELER
AS MAYOR OF PALO ALTO FOR 1996
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler served.as Mayor of the City of
Palo Alto from January 8, 1996, through January 6, 1997; and
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler provided strong leadership and
conducted Council business in an effective, efficient, and warm and
cheerful manner; and
WHEREAS, during her State of the City Address, Lanie
Wheeler announced Palo Alto Together, her proposal for building
community, a plan that emphasized caring, feeling, demonstrating,
and preserving togetherness among the Palo Alto community by
involving Palo Alto's greatest resource --its people; and
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler's -grass roots ideas included
bringing about friendly, walkable neighborhoods; focusing on Palo
Alto's heritage by preserving historic buildings and enhancing
public facilities; encouraging neighborhood involvement in
resolving problems; and expanding volunteer opportunities to
improve neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler carried out her convictions and
community spirit as she participated in the volunteer painting
party to spruce up the Cubberley Community Center, assisted in
removing graffiti, dressed up as the Fire Department's mascot
Sparky at a promotional event, masqueraded as "Jack is Back" on
Halloween, and proclaimed August 1996 as Block Parties Month to
honor the bonds of care and respect among residents; and
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler demonstrated her sensitivity,
humanitarianism, and respect as she recognized businesses and their
important role in the community, addressed the issue of escalating
rents, and made herself very accessible to meet with people and to
understand their personal issues and needs; and
WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler brought about consensus for a
harmonious resolution to the "demolition moratorium" controversy,
and her guiding style shifted the leadership role from the City
Council to its boards and commissions during joint sessions.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the
City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records its sincere
appreciation and the appreciation of the community to Lanie Wheeler
for her many good services to the City of Palo Alto during her term
as Mayor.
