RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE OF
LIZ KNISS AS MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss was elected to the City Council of the City of
Palo Alto in 1989 and re-elected in 1993 and 1997, and served in the
distinguished roles of Mayor of the City of Palo Alto during its Centennial
Year of 1994 and in the new millennium from January 10, 2000, to January 8,
2001, and Vice Mayor in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss has always demonstrated strong and effective
regional leadership; and
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss served as a Member of the Finance Committee in
1991 and from 1996 to 1997 and as Chairperson in 1996; and served as a
Member of the Policy and Services Committee in 1990, from 1992 to 1993, in
1995, 1998, and 1999 and as Chairperson in 1992; and
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss made the Family Resources Program a reality,
developing the idea during her first term as Mayor to address the needs of
families and ·children, finding that by her second term as Mayor this
Program was actively serving families and children; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of Liz Kniss in 1994 helped to establish
Palo Alto as the first city on the internet and to sustain Palo Alto's
reputation as the center of high technology during the internet revolution;
and
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss in 2000 was instrumental in reaching agreement
among Stanford University, Palo Alto Unified School District, and Santa
Clara County to preserve open space, community facilities, and reopen a
middle school; and
WHEREAS, Liz Kniss presided over the hiring of the new City
Manager Frank Benest and helped orient him to the city, working side by
side with him to develop a new set of priorities for the City of Palo Alto.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of
Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public service of Liz Kniss and
gratefully records its appreciation, as well as the appreciation of the
citizens of this community, for the meritorious service rendered and
contributions made during her term on the Council.
