HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 8005RESOLUTION 8005 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO SUPPORTING MEASURE A OF THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (VTA) TO EXTEND THE ONE-HALF PERCENT SALES TAX FOR TRANSPORTATION PURPOSES WHEREAS, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board of Directors on August 9, 2000, voted to place a half-cent transit sales tax on the November 7, 2000, General Election ballot allowing Santa Clara County voters the opportunity to vote on transportation improvements in the county; and WHEREAS, the goals of the plan are to provide transportation facilities and services that support and enhance our community's continued success by fostering a high quality of life to residents, and continued health of the economy; and WHEREAS, the goals, objectives, arid projects were formulated over the past 18 months with input from the VTA Board of Directors, cities and county staff, stakeholders from the community, and other public agencies; and WHEREAS, VTA works closely with local jurisdictions on region-wide strategies to address traffic congestion, access to jobs, and environmental concerns; and WHEREAS, the 30-year one-half cent sales tax would begin in 2006 when the existing (Measure A/B) tax expires; and WHEREAS, the sales tax measure requires two-thirds majority voter approval and must expire 30 years after implementation; and WHEREAS, the tax supports VTA' s 2020 Transportation Plan and Expenditure Program that · provides a balanced transportation system consisting of transit, roadway, bicycle, and pedestrian improvements; and WHEREAS, the revenue from the tax, which may be used only to finance transit projects, frees up State Transportation Improvement Program and Federal funds for roadway, bicycle and pedestrian projects; and WHEREAS, many future State and Federal highway will be readily available to advance highway projects, independent citizen watchdog committee consisting of citizens must review the program. dollars and an private NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby expresses support for VTA's 2000 Transportation Plan and Expenditure Program as a long-range transportation planning effort, focused on addressing the Valley's transportation challenges.
