RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO EXPRESSING
APPRECIATION TO DENNIS BACKLUND FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF
THE HISTORIC RESOURCES BOARD
WHEREAS, Dennis Backlund has served the City of Palo Alto as a
member of the Historic Resources Board from 1996 to 1999; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Backlund gave tirelessly of his time and talent,
thereby helping to bring about a successful resolution for important
historic preservation projects during his tenure, including the update
of the City's survey of historic resources and the drafting of the new
Historic Preservation Ordinance; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Backlund provided leadership on the Historic
Resources Board, taking a thorough and comprehensive approach in
reviewing projects that generated new ideas and caused the Board to
think beyond the obvious, and guiding his colleagues in crafting
motions and findings in professional language; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Backlund brought to the Historic Resources Board
the expertise of . advanced academic training in American and European
History and years of practical experience as a researcher in the
preservation field and was thereby able to suggest creative, pragmatic
solutions to assist the owners of historic properties in preserving
their building; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Backlund wore his erudition lightly, and
maintained an atmosphere of tolerance and humor during controversial
periods when the Historic Resources Board most needed tolerance and
humor.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Council of the City
of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records and extends its sincere
appreciation and the appreciation of the community to Dennis Backlund
for his faithful and excellent service rendered to the City.
