HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 7922RESOLUTION 7922 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE OF LANIE WHEELER AS MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler was elected to the City Council of the City of Palo Alto in 1991 and re-elected in 1995, and served in the distinguished roles of Mayor in 1996 and Vice Mayor in 1995 and 1999; and WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler served as a Member of the Finance Committee from 1992-94 and 1997-99 and as Chairperson in 1994 and 1998; and served as a Member of the Policy and Services Committee in 1995; and WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler represented Palo Alto as the delegate to the Santa Clara Cities Association in 1996 and 1999, as an alternate to LAFCO from 1996-1999, as a member of ABAG's Regional Planning Committee from 1996-1999, and as a member of the League of California Cities Administrative Services Policy Committee from 1997-1999; and WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler served as a Member of the Planning Commission from 1979-89 and as Chairperson in 1985-86; and WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler was instrumental in the implementation of "Palo Alto Together" which fostered cooperation and coordination between residents and businesses in Palo Alto, focused on enhancing the urban environment, promoted self-help, and expanded volunteer opportunities; and WHEREAS, as an advocate for recreation and sports, Lanie Wheeler chaired the Women's World Cup Soccer Committee for Palo Alto and sponsored a Youth Soccer Clinic on July 3, 1999; and -WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler carried out her convictions and concerns regarding the issue of escalating rents by holding a citywide Mayor's Forum, ·working with Senator Byron Sher' s Office on sponsoring statewide legislation to address this issue, and forming a task force of stakeholders and community leaders to develop recommendations for Council consideration; and WHEREAS, Lanie Wheeler is known for her extensive field trips with Council Member Kniss from card clubs to the Arastra Preserve to investigating citizen complaints in the neighborhoods. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public service of Lanie Wheeler and gratefully records its appreciation, as well as the appreciation of the citizens of this community, for the meritorious service rendered and contributions made during her term on the Council.
