HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 7918RESOLUTION 7918 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO HONORING GARY FAZZINO AS MAYOR OF PALO ALTO FOR JANUARY 4, 1999, THROUGH JANUARY 10, 2000 WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino served as Mayor of the City of Palo Alto from January 4, 1999, through January 10, 2000, making him the last Mayor of the twentieth century and the first Mayor of the twenty-first century; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino provided strong leadership and conducted Council business in an effective and efficient manner, even while teleconferencing from the Rugby World Cup in Dublin and from JFK's dorm room at Harvard; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino's dedication and commitment to a higher level of community involvement was demonstrated by his scheduling of eight "Conversations with the Mayor" meetings, twenty meetings with neighborhood groups, and countless appearances at non-profit and other events; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino's commitment to regional collaboration was manifested through his leadership in establishing the regular regional mayors' meetings with the Mayors of Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and the President of Stanford, and other joint appearances with the regional mayors' including "Border Crossings" which led to significant progress on regional transportation and other issues; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino played an integral role in the inauguration of the Palo Alto Shuttle program, actively encouraged establishment of the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority, and initiated the recruitment of a new City Manager; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino consistently supported the arts and culture by promoting a possible Stanford/Palo Alto Performing Arts Center, planning the Millennium Night -"Millennium in Motion" event, presiding over the Women's World Cup Soccer Semi-Final in Palo Alto, playing soccer weekly (weakly?) on athletic 'fields in Palo Alto, and serving as the Mayor during Stanford Football Team's trip to the Rose Bowl; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino worked hard to assure preservation of St. Ann Chapel as an historic structure; and WHEREAS, Gary Fazzino will be fondly remembered by the City Clerk's Office as the "drive-through Mayor" for the occasions where staff met him in the parking garage to sign important documents. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records its sincere appreciation and the appreciation of the community to Gary Fazzino for meritorious service rendered and contributions during his term as Mayor.
