HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 8682RESOLUTION NO 8682 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE OF JUDY KLEII\IBERG AS MAYOR WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg served as Mayor of the City of Palo Alto from January 9, 2006 through January 8, 2007; and WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg provided outstanding leadership as Mayor, leading the community forward on many fronts including environmental protection and emergency preparedness through the creation of the Palo Alto-Stanford Green Ribbon Task Force on Climate Protection and the Red Ribbon Task Force on Disaster Planning to address disaster and recovery preparedness, both of which created collaborative initiatives that bridged resource and service gaps and created stronger ties between city government, stakeholders groups and Stanford University; and WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg has led efforts to secure the safety of the County and City by preparing our staff and community against a threatened Pandemic Flu, including appearing in a national Center for Disease Control sponsored video on flu preparedness, and to restore safety in our community through the innovative Operation Safe Neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, during her term as Mayor, Judy Kleinberg has guided the City in renegotiating key labor contracts to reduce long term retiree medical liabilities, successful reorganization of the Department of Planning and Community Environment and the Utilities Department, completion of the Library Services Master Plan, continued work on plans for a new Public Safety Building, and the City's initiation of the Quimby Act to provide for more parkland acquisition; and WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg has continued strong support for the economic well- being of the City, through her initiation of the first annual Business of the City Luncheon to discuss Palo Alto business vitality and her support for Destination Palo Alto to enhance retail sales and City revenue; and WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg presided over the ribbon-cutting of the Opportunity Center, the reopening of Juana Briones Park and the Stanford Stadium, the celebration of numerous capital improvement projects, as well as multiple new business openings; welcomed delegations to the City from such far-flung places as Morocco, China and France; and hosted City celebrations for two state championship teams in basketball and football from Palo Alto High School; and WHEREAS, Judy Kleinberg has made significant contributions in her regional leadership roles as President of the Santa Clara County Cities Association, President of the League of California Cities Peninsula Division, Chair of the Santa Clara County Emergency Preparedness CounCil, and Director of the Santa Clara County Housing Trust Fund; and WHEREAS, there are innumerable other examples of her service to the City and the region. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby gratefully records its sincere thanks and the appreciation of the community to Judy Kleinberg for meritorious service rendered and contributions made during her term as Mayor. She thanked her for being her mentor while serving as Vice Mayor and for leaving the City in great shape. MOTION: Council Member Beecham moved, seconded by IVlorton, to adopt the Resolution. Resolution 8682 entitled "Resolution of the Council of the City of Palo Alto Commending the Outstanding Public Service of Judy Kleinberg as IVlayor" Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss referred to former Mayor Kleinberg's background, leadership, community involvement, and how she had given so much to the community in the past 23 years. She congratulated former Mayor Kleinberg on her accomplishments, which were done with diplomacy, wit, skill and humor, and presented her with a resolution of appreciation and a plaque from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. John King, Chair Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce, 724 Burran Avenue, extended good wishes to former Mayor Kleinberg for continued success in her many personal and public activities, and thanked her for the many contributions to the community. Dan Dykwel, 480 Gary Court, spoke of the former Mayor's attributes of leadership ranging from the ability to encourage participation in community service and soliciting the experience that existed among citizens. Annette Ashton, 2747 Bryant, thanked and acknowledged the former Mayor in elevating the Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Program as a top City priority and driving the topic forward. MOTION PASSED 7-0, Kleinberg abstaining, Barton absent. Mayor Kishimoto presented the former mayor with a gift from the Council, which was an art piece entitled "Grass Roots," created by Palo Alto artist Sharon Chinen.
