RESOLUTION NO. 6647
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA
OPPOSING THE ELIMINATION OF THE HETCH HETCHY
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM
WHEREAS, the United States Congress approved the construction of
the Hetch Hetchy Water Supply System in 1913; and
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area has grown and prospered during
the twentieth century partially as a result of a dept..1dable water
supply from the Hetch Hetchy Water System; and
WHEREAS, the Hetch Hetc hy System now serves more than two mi 11 ion
people in the San Francisco Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, the secretary of the Interior has proposed to eliminate
the Hetch Hetchy Water Supply System: and
WHEREAS, said action would eliminate a dependable source of water
of the highest purity; and
WHEREAS, said action would eliminate an environmentally safe and
economical source of hydroelectric energy,
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Al to does resolve
as follows:
1. The council opposes the destruction of the Retch Hetchy
Water St1pply System, as it would adversely affect the lives of the
citizens of the Sar. Francisco Bay Area and the State of
California, unless the users can be absolutely assured of the
availability of an alternative supply of comparable cost, quality,
and quantity.
2. The Council sl:pports t~e City and County of San Ft·an-
cisco' s efforts to enlighten the Secretary of the Interior on the
importance of the He tch Hetchy water and powP.r system to the peo-
ple of thE. Bay Area and the State.
3. The Council directs the City Clerk to transmit copies of
this Resolution to the Secretary of the Interior, all Members of
Congress of the United States who represent Palo Alto and san
Francisco Bay Area communities, ane to the City and County of San
Francisco.
