RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CIT~ OF PALO ALTO
SUPPORTING THE COMPLETION OF THE SAN FRANC!SCO BAY
NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
WHEREAS, of the ori~inal 200,000 acres of San Francisco Bay
wetlands, only 37,000 reina.in 1 and almost every wetlands parcel has
been proposed for de\alopment; and
WHEREAS, these remaining acres ar-e ."ssential for wildlife
habitat, pollution control, flood controi / sr~·.rning grounds for
fish and shellfish, gro~ndwater recharge and s~ltwater intrusion
control: and
WHEREAS, development of these lands would increase traffic
problems and seismic liability for local jurisdictions; and
WHEREAS, preservation of the wetlands would pro·.ride needed
open space and recreational opportunities for th~ communityr and
WHEREAS, these lands can be protected by urging the U. s.
Fish and Wildlife Set:vice to accelerate acquisition of the SrOOO
acres that remain i~om the initial Congressional authorization for
the San Francisco Bay National Wildlif~ Rofuge (1972)1 and
WHEREAS, additior.al endangered wetlands can be protected and
the Refuge be completed by the Congress p.issing new legislation.
NOW, TBF1.EPORt!, the Council of the City of Palo Alto urges
the preservation cf endangered wetlands by placing them tondeor
p'9!'7manent protection of the 8an Francisco Bay National Wildlife
Ref1Jge.
