HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 6424•• RESOLUTION 6424 RESOLUTION Cf" THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO CCJ11MEMORATING THE PRESENCE OF, AND WELCmING TO THE CITY OF PALO ALTO THE HONORABLE HEKO WIERENGA, MAYOR OF OUR SISTER .:ITV OF ENSCHEOE, THE NETHERL.l\NDS, THE HONORABLE HENK VAH DER WALLE, ALDERMAN FOR FINANCIAL AFFAIRS, ANO JAN VAN DER VEEN, HEAD OF THE ECONOMIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT WHEREAS, the Sister City concept was initially inaugurated by the President of the United States in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the peoples of the United States and other nations; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto and the City of Enschede entered int.o an official Sister C·ity affiliation in May, 1980; and WHEREAS, the affiliation between the City of Enschede and the City Palo Alto is a people-to-people/community-to-community relationship; and WHEREAS, there have been n1J11erous cultural exchanges \lkiich have cultivated and promoted understanding between the people of the City of Enschede and the people of the City of Palo Alto; and WHEREAS, the City of Enschede has presented to the City of Palo Alt.o several gifts of friendship including "The Tree of Life," a carved gable sign which is exhibited in the Palo Alto City Hall; and WHEREAS, this Council wishes t.o commemorate the first vhi t to Palo Al to of the Mayor of Enschede, Heko Wierenga, Henk van der Walle, Alderman for Financial Affairs, and Jan van der Veen, Head of the Economic Affairs Department. NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SECTION l. That the Palo Alto City Council recognizes the presence of and welcomes to Palo Alto Mayor Heko Wierenga, Alderman Henk van der Walle, and Mr. Jan van der Veen of Enschede, The Nethe~lands. SECTION 2. That this Councfl, on behalf of the people of Pa1o Alto, expresses its heartfelt appreciation to the City of Enschede for its significant contribution tc the Sister City program. SECTION 3. That this Counc i1 , on behalf ::>f the people of Palo Al to, reaffirms the Sister City relationship between the two communities and looks forward tD many years of friendsMp and opportunities for further educatfanal and cultural exchange.
