REQUEST: Install stop sfgns on Cllffornfa Avenue at the northerly leg of Park
Boulevard.
RECEIVED FROM: David Weldl. Jan St. Peter and Dwight Bolfnger, 111 Palo Alto
residents.
EXISTING SITUATION: California Avenue fs a through street at Part Boulevard.
Ti"affic on Part his 1 stop sf gn. Tbts fs a fnterwct1an of two collector
streets.
ANALYSIS: As s"°'"1 fn the stetch, this is 1 unique fntersectfon. tn addition
to the vehicular traffic, ft ts used heavily by bfcyclfsts. buws and
pedestrians. Pr~cto.inately, traffic tu.ans right and left at the fntersection.
Most drhers eastbound on ca ltfornfa turnfftg left. tJCPtCt that westbound drhers
on Ca lifornfa (tifhat appears to be 1 llfnor driveway due to the f ntersection
configuration) would stop~ Since drhers on westbound California do not ttave a
stop sign, these drivers have a r1ght of wy and, t:tlerefore, they do not stop
for left turnfng trafftc. Add1tfona11y, the vfs1bflf1N of bfcyclfsts colring out
of the tunnel and entering ttlfs fat.ersectfon •~• fs also not good at thh
location.
Based on f1e1d d)se..vatfons, restrtcted risfbflity for bfcyclfsts, and an
u~usual intersection conffgur1tfon, ft ts appropriate to install a stDi) sf~ on
westbovnd Ca1ffon1fa. Beause ft fs 1 thrff way fntersectfon, operatfon11ly ft
fs 1 lso desirable to put 1 stop ~1gn on eastbound Cllffornfa to help reduce any
confusion.
RECf.M4ENt>ATION: Staff l"ec'111mnds fnstal11tfon of stop signs on Calffornfa at Part.

REQUEST: Remove stop sf gns frOll Altaranta Avenue at ce,.eza Dr"ive.
RECEIVED FRCJI: Barron Park Neighborhood Association.
EXISTING SITUATION: This is a three-way stop intersection. Amaranta is a
collector street and Cereza fs a loc:a 1 street.
ANALYSIS: The original justification for 1nsta.11fng the stop signs is unknown.
Pirhips they .ere tnstalled to help facilfute the crossing of Alnaranta by
school students tc and fr011 Juana Briones School and other schools. No traffic
counts were done, but t t is esti111ted that traffic vol.es are low. No
accidents were reported to the police departlltnt during 1984. Field
observations indicate that no sidewalks exist f n the area and bushes are growing
on the southeast corner right up to the edge of pa.vt:vnt. Should the stop signs
be re1AOved fr~ Allilranta, vehicles on Cereza wil 1 need to pull forward up to the
edge of the pavement to clearly see traffit on Amlrantl.
A discussion with Chlnaine Moyer. Chl1,.n. PTA Trafff c Safety Board. fnd1cates
that stop sf gns on Amarante be re'tltned bf.ause •ny sta.tdents use this
intersection. Allaranta serves students going to Gunn Hfgh School, Hoover School
and Juana Briones School.
REC"'4£NDATION: Stop signs on Mirant.a at Cereu be retained.
COUNCIL DIRECTED STAFF:
1: TO REMOVE STOP SIGNS FROM AMARANTE AT CEREZA: ANO
2: TO IMPROVE VISIBILITY AT THE INTERSECTION.
