HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 6351e RESOLUTION 6351 fl (. ~ .. ~ , i ~-JAL RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE ~ITY OF PALO ALTO ENDORSING THE PALY THEATRE DEPARTMENT'S PROPOSED VISIT TO THE SOVIET tMION IN JUNE, 1985 Wl£REAS, the City of Palo Alto fs colllft1tted t.o fosterfng good wfll, peace and fr1endshfp anong the nations of the ~rld, and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Al to has demonstrated its com1 tment to world peace by undertaking effort·:.; to comun1cate with the cftizens of Uzhgorod, a connun1ty in the Soviet Union, and WHEREAS, 1985 has been decl aired the Internatfonal Year of Youth by the United Nat1o~s General Asst!mbly, and Wt£REAS, opportunities for the young people of the Soviet Union and the United States to 11eet and interact occur too seldom, and W1£REAS, the students 1n the Theatre Department of Palo Al to H1 gh School are preparing a visit to several Soviet cities 1n June, 1985, with its spring production of •RORleo and Jul 1et• as a gift to Soviet teenaqers. WHEREAS, the Paly Theatre Ai1gel s has been fonned to support this effort of people-to-people contact, and Wl£REAS, 1t is the be1 ief of all participants that it is iinperative that such people-to-people efforts be undertaken in the name of world peace and international, intercul tural understanding, NOW THEREFCRE BE IT RESOLVED that the Palo Alto City Council wholeheartedly endorses the undertaking of the Paly Theatre Angels a11d the Palo Al to High School Theatre Depar'blent, and urges the entire comun1ty tD support this project and help the groups reaHze the goal of transporting the cast a:id crew of •Romeo and Jul1etw to the Soviet Union as a goodwill gesture; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLYEll, that the City of Palo Alto tereby declares the month of March •ro Russia •1th Love and Shakespeare" N:>nth fn order to cal 1 at tent fon to and celebrate this project.
