Clark, a native of Mayfield and a Captain in the U. s. Army Balloon Service during Wor1d War I, commenced his career as a Palo Alto architect in 1919 after completing the design and construction of the Herbert Hoover home at Stanford; and WHEREAS, as the City 1 s foremost architect for six decades, Birge M. Clark designed more than one hundred commercial~ institutional, and residential buildings constructed in Palo Alto, of which one-third are cited as exceptional, major, or contributing in quality by the Palo Alto Inventory of Historic Buildings, including the U. S. Post Office and the Senior Citizens Center (which are California Points of Historical Interest), the Horris House (listed in the National Register of Historic Places), the Lucie Stern Community Center and the Stern residences, and many others in his masterly form of the California Colonial style; and W HER t. Clark has served the City for many years in many ways anc is now retiring from the Palo Alto Historic Resources Board and the Board of Directors of the Palo Alto Historical Association. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby commends the outstanding public service of Birge M. Cl ark and records its appreciation as well as the appreciation of the citizens of this community for the service and contribution rendered, and proclaims June 5, 19&4, as 11 BIRGE M. CLARK UAY" in Palo Alto, and encourages all residents to honor the generous services and superb architectural achievements of Birge M.
