RESULUTlON OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CIT7 OF PALO ALTO
RECUGHIZlNG THE OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE
GUNr HIGH SCHOOL ANO PALU ALTO HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMIC UECATHLON TEAMS
ANO THE r~EMENDOUS SUPFQRT THEY RECEIVED
FRUM GUNN ANO PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
WHtREAS, the Gunn High School Academic Decathlon Team won
the Santa Clara County competition in November by finishing in
tlrst ~lace, by scor1ng a total of 40,988 points; and
WHE~EAS, Palo Alto High School finished in second place,
scoriny a total of 40,322 points; and
WHEREAS, ttle students of both schools spent many ex.tra
hours in preparation for the national competition taking tests
in the following areas: conversationdl skills, essay writing,
t or ma I speech , ca re er educ at i on , En g 1 i s h a n d 1 1 t er a tu re a n d
grammar, fine arts, mathematics, physical and biological
sciences and soc1d1 sciences; and
WHEREAS, Coaches of the Gunn and Palo Alto Academic,
uecathlon Teams, and other Gunn High and Palo Alto High teacners
devoted a sign1ficant amount of the1r own time and talents to
prepare their teams for the Decathlon Events; and
WHEREAS, the Gunn High School Team members are He~i
Parthasarathy, Stephanie Blank, Steve Marer, Jennifer Hnookin,
Ken Uetzel, Matt Collins, Colin Adle.ins, Mi"lan Vikramsingh and
the coaches are Tim Farre11 and Frank Ratliff and the Palo Alto
High School Team members are Geoff Emerick., Joanthan Levy, Jim
~urnfield, Anne Rothkotf:. Jennifer Skurnick, Oon Ousterhoute,
Peter Jacobson, Bob Koester. David McDowell and the coaches are
John Thompson and Shelia Wolfsohn.
NOW, THtKEFOIU., SE IT RESOLVEO, that the City of Palo Alto
does resolve as follo~s:
Section 1. That the Council recognize the outstanding
accomplishments of the uunn High School and Palo Alto High
School Academic Decathlon Teams, in particular their success in
µlacinu first and second in Santa Clara County compet1tion.
~ection l. That the Council recognize the tremendous
contributions made by ijunn High School and Palo Alto High School
coaches and teachers in preparing the stude~ts for competition.
5ection 3. That the Council on behalf of the peopie of ~alo
Alto ~xpresses lts conyratulations to the Gunn High School and
Palo Alto Hiyh ~chool Academic Decathlon Teams on their
extraordinary accomplishments and s~nds Gunn High School
Academic uecathlon Team its best wishes for continued success in
the State and National Chamµ1onships.
