HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 6196' ' ' ORIGINAL RE~OLUTlON NO. 6196 R~!:iULUTlON OF THE COUNCIL Uf fHE CllY OF PALU ALTO D~CLAHING THE ~ESULTS OF THE CONSOLIDATED MUNICIPAL ELECTION HELU ON TUESUAY, NOVEMBER ij, 1983 WHEREA!:i, on November 8-, 1983, a general municipal elec- tion cunsolidated with Santa Clara County elections was duly he?d tn the City of Palo Alto pursuant to the provisions of Section 3 of Article Ill of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto for the purpose of electing four Councilmembers, each for a full term of four years expiring December 31, 1987, and one Counc1lmember for a short term of two years expiring December 31, 1985; and WHEREAS, on November 8, 1983, a special election consoli· dated with the general municipal election was duly held in the City of Palo Alto pursuant to the provisions of Article III of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto for the purpose of submitting to the voters the following measures: City of Palo Alto Measure C Shall the Charter of the City of P~lo Alto be amended to eliminate the Office of the Controller appointed by the City Council and to create a new Office of Auditor to be appointed by the City Council? City of Palo Alto Measure O $ha11 the Charter of the City of Palo Alto be amended to authorize the City Council to appoint an indepenaent board or boards for Cable Television matters? City of Palo Alto Measure E Shall the Charter of the City of Palo Alto be amended to give the City Council author- ity to grant a franchise or franchises for Cable Televisio~? and; , ' ' .,. WH[REAS, due and legal notice of said mun1cipal and spe· cial electtons was given as required by law; and WHEREAS, on the 8th day of November 1983, at the hour of 7:UU in the morning of said day the polls were duly and regularly opened for said municipal and special ~lections and said polls were continuously kept open for said purpose from the time they were so opened until 8:00 in the evening of said day; and WHEREAS, 1n accordance with California Elections Code Section 233U6 the Board of Supervisors and the Registrar of Voters of Santa Clara County have conducted a complete and official can- vass of the returns of said elections; and WHEREAS, Article Ill, Section 4 of the Charter of the Git1 of Palo Alto states that the Council shall act as a canvass- ing board to caovass the results of such elections; and WHEl<.EAS, the Counci 1 of the City of Pa lo Al to met at its usual place of meet~ng and did then and there canvass the returns of said municipai and spectal consolidated e1ect1<>ns and declare tne results thereof; NOW, THEREFOKE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SECTION 1. The Council f1nds and declares that: (a~ A mun1c1pal election was duly and regularly held on November 8, 1983~ ;n all things according to the Charter of the City of· Palo Alto, Resolutton No. 6154 and the election laws of the State of California; {b} The whole number of votes cast in the City at said munic1pa1 election for the purp~se of electing four Counci lmembers for ful 1 terms fncludtng those cast upon absentee ballots, was 47,301 on 13,540 bal1ots (36.41 turnout); (c) Tne total number of votes g1ven and cast at sa1d municipal election, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was as follows for the candidates for City Council for full term: UONALU K. SECTION 2. The Council finds and declare~ that: (a) A municipal election was duly and regularly held on November 8, 1983, in all things accord1ng to the Charter of the City of Palo Alto, Resolution No. 6154 and the electton laws of the State of California; (b) The whole number of votes cast in the City at said municipal election for the purpose of electing one Council- member for a short term including those cast upon absentee bal- lots, was 10,810 on 13,540 ballots (36.4% turnout); {c) The total number of votes given and cast at said municipal electiont including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was as follows for the candidate for City Council for the short term: BOB f'IJSS SAM OARAM ANNE WITHERSPOON 4,830 1.018 4,962 44. 7"/. 9 .. 41 45.9S TOTAL 10 .810 100.0% (d) Anne Witherspoon being the candidate receiving the highest number of votes for the office of Councilmember for a short two-year term. was duly and regularly elected for term of two years commencing January 1. 1984 1 to serve as Counc11member of the c;ty of Palo Alto. SECTION 3.
