k~SOLUTION UF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
CONtiRATULATIN~ PARTICIPANTS
lN PALO ALTO'S DOWNTOWN ARCHITECTURAL CHARETTE
WHEREAS, from September 30 through October 2, 1983, the
Downtown Arch1tectural Charette was held in Palo Alto; and
WH~REAS, Professor Paul Neel and twelve graduate
~rchitectural students from California Polytechnic State un;versity
at San Luis Obispo generously qonated their t1me and efforts; and
WHEREAS, each team of arch~tectural students worked on
challenging ass1gnments illustrating in numerous sketches how
Uowntown Palo Alto could appear 1n the future; and
WHEREAS, the scope of these ass1gnments included:
a) developing certain blocks to max1mum tleight and
bulk under current regulat;ons and des1gn gu;delines,
b) preserving downtown structures of architectural
and h1stor1c 1nterest by transferr1ng unused development r1ghts to
other retail and office blocks.
c} upgrading downtown alleys with innovative yet
economical techniques.
d) applying amenity zoning incentives to selected
downtown retail and off1ce blocks; and
WHEREAS:. each team worked diligently and creatively for two
days and nights on its respective assignments; and
WHEREAS, each team presented innovative and thought provok1ng
conceptual designs at a public presentation at the Palo Alt~ Cultural
Center on October Z, 1983; ano
WHEREAS, members of the City Council, Planning Commission,
Architectural Review Boara, Historic Resources Board, and citizens
of Palo Alto have been most enthusiastic in their response to the
designs and ideas generated by this Downtown Arch1tectural Charette.
NOW, THERE FORE• BE IT RESOLVED, that the Counc i1 of the City
~f Palo Alto hereby gratefully records 1ts appreciation and
congratulations as well as the appreciation of the community, for the
outstanding ac;n1eve111ents and hard work of Professor Neel and the
students from Ca11forn1a Polytechnic State University at San Luis
Ub1spo.
