T~lMENOUUS SUP.,OR1 THEY REC El VED FROM PALO AL TO HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS wHll<EA:>, tnt: Palo Alto High School Academic Decathlon Team (Scott Dinwiddie, William Northway, Tom Fidddula.n, Simon Hawkins, Noga Tarnopolsky, Jim McDonnell) won the :Sa.nta Clar.s County competition in November by finishing in first place ahead of Gunn High School; and WHEREAS, they spent many extra hours in pre pa rat ion for the nationa 1 competition takrng tests in the following areas: conversational sic.ills, essay writing, formal speech, economics, English literature a~d gralllllar, fine arts, mathematics, physical and biological sciences, social sciences and a super quiz or. "The Housing Cris1s"; and WHE:.IU:.AS, John Thompson and Sha lah Wolfsohn, Coaches of the Academic Oecathl on Team. and other Palo Alto teachers devoted a significant amount of their own time and talents to pre~re tne team for the Decathlon Events; and WHEl<EASt the Palo Alto High School Acadetnic Decathlon Team culminated their hard work and dedication bi representing the Stdte of California and winning the second consecutive National Academic Uecathlon Championship, finishing first by 2,50(, points aheod of second place Ohio; and Wl-i!:.Rt.AS~ they won l.$ gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze individual medals in the national compet1t1on; and WH£REA~, in every academic category Paio Alto High SChool stude11ts took top honors; dr1d WHERt:As. Palo Alto High School alternates (Melissa Dinwiddie, Anne Corning and Jennifer Skurnick) were the top alternates of all the states competing. NOW, THERE.FURE, BE H ~SOLVt:.O. that the Council of the City of Palo Alto does resolve as follows: Section 1. That the Council recognize the out~tanding accomplishments of the Palo Alto High School Academic Decathlon Team 1n parth:ular its success in winning the second consecutive National Academic Decathlon Championship. Section 2. That the Council recognize the tremendous contributions made by Palo Alto High "S"c~n.>1 teachers in preparing the students for competition. Section 3.
