RESOtUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
KlCUGNlllNG BIRGE M. CLARK, RECIPIENT OF THE
ORIGINAL
PALO ALTO CHAMBER OF C0"4ERCE'S DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK is a native Palo Al tan who attended Palo Alto
schools, com)leted undergraduate studies at Stanford and rece1ved his degree
Li architecture from Col umbh. University in 1917; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK, who celebrated his 88th Birthday 1n April of
this year, served as conmanding officer of the Third Balloon Company in Allied
Expeditionary Forces during World War I, was cited for gallantry )n Actiun and
returned to the U.S. in 1919; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK founded his architectural practice in Palo Alto
in 1922, and remains active today as senior partner in the finn of Clark,
Stromquist and Sandstrom; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M CLARK'S best known local works include design of the
Herbert Hoover residence on the Stanford campus now occupied by the University
president, the Palo Alto Post Office on Hamilton Avenue, which has been
nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, the Lucie Stern
Conmunity Center complex, building of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, many
buildings for Hewlett-Packard Company, and the main office of Northern
California Savings & Loan; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK is a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Palo
Alto, a member of the American Legion for more than fifty years, the oldest
living past-pre~ident of the Palo Alto Chamber of Conmerce (1933-34) and
"dean" of the 1 ocal architectural conmunity; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK has served his conmunity and profession with
Jistinction and quiet generosity and is respected and admired by all who knew
him; and
WHEREAS, each year the Palo Alto Chailt>er of Conmerce organizes a
Distinquished Citizen Awards Program and since the inception of this program
in 1945 only twelve other individuals have been so honored; and
WHEREAS, BIRGE M. CLARK and his sister ESTHER B. CLARK are the Chamberfs
choice as DISTINGUISHED CITIZENS of 1981;
NOW, THEREFORE, TH:::: OOUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO AL-iO OOES RESOLVE that it
congratulates BIRGE M. CLARK, HIS WIFE LUCILE, ANO THEIR FAMILY on his receipt
of this Award, and joins the Chamber in recognizing BIRGE M. CLARK'S
outstanding and conscientious service to this conmunity:
