PLANHit«P DEPARTMENT. 3-78 t e Medical Center 9 Veterans Adm ini st ration Exhibit "B" October 22, 1980 Cnai rman 1 Board of Di rectors CofllTlunity legal Services of Santa Clara County 210 South First Street San Jose, Ca. 95113 Dear Mr. Chairman: 300i Miranda Avenue Palo Alto, CA 94304 I have been informed that there is a p~ssibiiity that the North County Office of Community Legal Services may be closing. On behalf of the 1,000 to 1,100 inpatients and 2,000 to 3,000 active outpatients of this medical center, I wish to voice a strong objection to the proposed action. I am certain that if the North County Office were closed few of our patients would receive legal assist~nce with their problems, due primarily to the difficulty of arranging transportation to S2~ Jose. Presently, with an office in Palo Alto, only a bus trip is involved to obtain quality legal assistance, and, when a patient is unable to leave the medical center, an attorney from the North County Office comes to the medicai center. It is unlikely that our patients could go to San Jose, due tu the longer bus ride and the necessity for transfers as well as their health problems. The Veterans Administration has no lega·1 staff at this medical center for our patients' personal legal problems and, the=refore, must depend on corflTluni ty resources. OuY' patients do have many frequent legal needs. The closing of the North County Legal Aid Office would be, indei:?d~ a great hardship to our patiNlts, an~ would largely preclude them from getting legal representation. Sincerely yours, In Reply Reier To: 122
