RESOLUTION NO. 6070
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
ENDORSING THE RIGHT OF THE PALO ALTO JAYCEES TO
CONTINUE TO BE A JAYCEE CHAPTER AND TO PROVIDE
LEADERSHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN AS WELL
AS MEN AND PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 15, 1982 PALO ALTO
JAYCEES DAY
WHEREAS, the Palo Al to Jaycees has been an outstanding contribu-
tor to the conununity for over 30 years providing valuable assistance to
the underprivileged, youth, senior citizens, and the handicapped, and
raising large sums of money for thP Palo Alto Senior Center, Muscular
Dystrophy, Easter Seals, Cerebral Palsy, Children 1 s Health Council,
Palo Alto Community Child Car.e, and the Child Advocacy Council: and
WHEREAS, the Palo Al to Jaycees has helped to train young leaders
in business, education, and city government for over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, the Palo Al to Jaycees continues to be recogni zea by the
Cal~fornia Jaycees as one of the most outstanding Chapters in the state
(t4 out of 235 California chapters as of August, 1982); and
WHEREAS, since 1975 the Palo Alto Jaycees has effectively offered
woman the same leadership t ·ining opportunities that are available to
men; and
WHEREAS, the u.s. ,Jaycees filed suit to revoke the Palo Alto
Jaycees• charter because of its membership policies; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE
as follows:
SECTION 1. Palo Alto Jaycees should have the right to continue to
be a Jaycees' Chapter.
SECTION 2. Women should have the opportunity for leadership
training in the Palo Alto Jaycees as well as men.
SECTION 3. Local Jaycees' chapters should decide their own
membership policies.
SECTION 4.
Al to Jaycees in
policies.
U.S. Jaycees should cease its actions against the Palo
court or otherwise because of Palo Al to' s membership
SECTION 5. November 15 ~ 1982 shall be proclai.med Palo Al to
Jaycees Day in the City of Palo Alto, California in recognition of
their valuable ana dedicated service to the Palo Alto community over a
very long period of time as well as to show support for the Palo Alto
Jaycees in its dispute with the U.S. Jaycees.
