Home My WebLink AboutRESO 6035• • RESOLuTION 603 5 ·---• RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO f.l ro INVITING THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE TO HOLD SUPER BOWL XIX, XX OR XXI AT STANFORD STADIUM ORIGINAL WHEREAS, the National Football League wi 11 January 20, 1985, Super Bowl XX on January 26, January 25, 1987; and conduct Super Bowl XIX on 1986 and Super 80~1 XXI on WHEREAS, the San Franc1 sco Forty-Ni ners, winners of Super Bowl XVI and current National Football le-"gue Champions, advocate the holding of Super Bowl XIX, XX Or' XXI at Stanfcrd Stadium; and WHEREAS, t~e Nati on al Fcotbal 1 league wi 11 meet on or about June 2, 1982 to detern1'\ne the location of the 1985, 1986 and 1987 Super Bowl games; and WHEREAS, numerous communities in the San Francisco B~y Ar1~a. including the City and County of San Francisco, San Mateo County a11d Santa Clara County ha"Ve officially wel corned the holding of Super Bowl XIX, Sup:r Bowl XX or Super Bowl XXI in the San Franc~sco Bay Area at Stanford Stadium; and WHEREAS, Stanford University has indicated an interest in making Stanford Staaium available for Super Bowl XIX, Super Bowl XX or Super Bowl XXl; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is the municipality adjacent to Stanford Stadium and most of the traffic to Stanford Stadium wi 11 pass through its streets; and WHEREAS, the City of Pa~o Alto and Stanford University have a long and successful hi story of cooperation in the staging of major events at Stanford Stadium such as Stanford-California {"Big Game") football games, the annual East-West Shrine football game and one of t:he first U.S. Sovi tit track. meets; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Counci: of the City of Palo Alto extends an enthusiastic and warm invitation to the National Football League to select Stanfor1 Uni versi'ty as the site of either Super Bowl XIX on January 20. 1985, Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986 or Super Bowl XXI on January 25, 1981; and, be it FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City o'' Palo Alto hereby expresses its intent to take all action necessary and appropriate to effet;tuate the selection of the 1985, 1986 or 1987 National Footbal 1 League Super Bowl game in the San Francisco Bay Area at Stanford Stadium; and, be it FURTHR RESOL VEO, ttiat upon the se 1 ecti on of Stanford Stadium as the sit~ of the aforesaid Super Bowl, the City of Palo Alto wi 11 work cooperatively W'i th Stanford University, the City and County of San Francisco, other communities in the Bay Area and the Nati anal Football League to ensure that the Super Bowl held at Stanford Stadium is a resounding success; and, be it FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the National Football League and to al1 footbal 1 team organi zatians which are members of the National Football League and that its intent be communfcated to those entities w1th clear and convincing fer··1r and that all steps necessary to effectuate :ts intent be carried out.
