RESOLUTION Of THE COUNCIL Of THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
RECOGNIZING THE ()JTSTANOlNG ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE ~ALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM
ANO THE TRE~ENDOUS SUPPORT THEY RECEIVED
FROM PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
WHEREAS, the Palo Alto H19h School Academ1c Decathlon Team won the Santa Clara
County compet 1t1 on 1 n Nov~ber by f1 nish1 ng 1 n f1 rst pl ace ahead of Gunn H1 gh School;
and~
.. HEREAS, they spent many extra hours in preparation for the national competition
taking tests in the fo1.1owfng areas: conversational skilh. essay writing, formal
speech, career education, English literature and grammar, fine arts, mathematics,
physical and biological sciences, social sci enc es and a super quiz on "Our Energy
Predicament"; and
WHEREAS, John Thompson and Sh al ah Wo 1 f sh on, Coaches of the Academic Decath 1 on
Team, and other Palo Alto teachers devoted a c,;ignificant "1!ount of their own time and
talents to prepar~ the taam for the Decathlon Events; and
WHEREAS, they culminated their hard work and dedication by winning the first
ever National Acad2mic necathlon Championship representing the State of California
finish: ng first by 4 ,300 points ahead of second pl ace Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, they won 13 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze individual rtJedais in the
national competition.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE !T RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pdlo Alto does
resolve as follows:
Section 1. That the Council recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the Palo
Alto High School Academic Decathlon Team in particular its success in winning the
fir~t ever National Academic Decathlon Championship.
Section 2. That the Counci 1 recognize the tremendous contri buti ans made by Palo
Alto teachers in preparing the students for competition.
Section 3. That the Covricil, on behalf of the people of Palo Alto expresses it~
congratvlations to the Palo Alto High School Academic Decathlon Team on ft~
extraordinary accomplishments.
