ORDINANCE OF 'rHE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
AMENDING CHAPTER 6.16 OF THE PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL
CODE PERTAINING TO DOG LICENSES AND REGULATIONS
The Council of the City of Palo Alt~ does ORDAIN as
follows:
SECTION l. Chapter 6.16 of the Palo Alto M:unicipal·code
is hereby amended to read as indicated in EXHIBIT A attached
hereto and made a part hereof.
SEC'I'ION 2. This ordinance shall become effective q>on
the expiration of thirty days from its passage.

6.16.010 License and metallic tag. No person shall keep,
or ca use to be kept, any dog tfia·-c -is over the age Of four
months, within the· c}.ty for more than two days, unless the
dog is licensed as provided in this title and has around
its neck a collar to which is attached a rn~tallic
plate or tag as provided by this title.
6.16.020 License fees.
(a) Application for a dog license shall be made to
the city treasurer, who shall issue the ricen$~ upon
application therefor and the payment of the required fee.
Edch license shall be issued in the name.cf-the owner or
person having custody of such dog and sh.all not be trans~
ferable. The annual fee for each license shall be three
dollars, except that for irtitial lice~ses purchased from
January 1 to and including June 30, the fee shall be $1.50.
(b) An additional fee of $1. 00 shall be -'paid if app_lica
tion is made after August 1st or more·. than 30 days after:
(1) Change of ownership;

_ 6-.1&. o4o_ Tag specifications -Records. A metallic plate or --
tag shall ·be -furnished to the owner with each 9'6g l.icense. Such
plates or taqs shall have inscribed thereon the nwnber of the
license with which it is given and year for which it is is$ued.
The Poundmaster shall keep a record of all licenses issued, a
; general description of each dog for which a license is issued,
_ and the name of the owner or possessor of each dog for which a
license is issued. -
6.16.050 Failure to comply -Impoundment. Every dog
not wearing a collar to which is attached-a valid plate
or tag provided und.;?r this title, found or being within the
city, shall be taken by~ t.he pound.master or the police and
impounded in_ the_ animal shelter,_ where it may __ be __ re_deemed
by the owner or person entitled to its possession, within
three days after impounding, on payment to the city of all
accrued.charges and costs. If not redeemed, such dog shall
be.destroyed by the poundmaster, provided, however, that the
po:undmaster is authorized to keep valuable dogs and sell them,
and his r•ceipt for the sale there~f ~hall be a valid title
to the purchaser. Provided furthe~, that any dog which has
been within the city for less than two days and which is led
by a cord, chain or other thing, or confined. iri a vehicle,
shall not be_taken by any officer or impounded in the animal
shelter. -
6.16.060 Duplicate ta2s. Whenever any plate or tag as
provided herein is lost or stolan, the city treasurer may
issu~ ~ duplicate upon application therefor and upon the
payment of one dollar and the filing of an affidavit by the
owner or possessor of said dog to the effect that such tag
or plate was lost or stolen~
6.16.070 License fee_..:: Paid upon red~mption. If a
license fee has ·not been paid for,_ the then current year for
-any impounded dog, the party redeeming must, before redemp
tion, pay such license fee. Whenever a dog is redeemed,_ the
party redeeming must give the Poundmaster c;l receipt for the
dog.

dogs or as a veteririarian who sel-ls, gives away· or_ in any
manner causes the·ownership or permanent posseasion of any
dog, whet~er over four months of age or not, to be trans
ferred to any person, shall notify the poundmaSter "in writ'ing·,
of that fact' within five davs after the date of StJ.ch sale ·or
.tr~nfifer. --such 'notice shall state!· the kind of dog, the-name
of' the dog , if ·any·, and the person to whom the docj -has -_been
sold:.or transferred. -..
