ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
AMENDING CHAPTER 18. 57 OF THE PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL
CODE [GENERAL MANUFACTURING COMBINING DISTRICT}
REGARDING GENERAL BUSINESS SERVICES AND GENERAL

WHEREAS, the Counc i 1 of the City qf Palo Al to is concerned about
the jobs/housing imbalance in the conununity, caused in part by develop~
ment an.d redevelopment of commercial properties into business offices
and servicesi and
WHEREAS, this Council ~:irected that land use studies be conducted
of ~everal areas in Palo Alto where off ice development was occurring
more rdpidly than desired; and
WHEREAS, modifying the General M.anuf acturing Combinhig District
(GM(8)) is the most appropriate method to limit office us~s.

SECTION 1. Section 18.57.050 of the Palo Alto Municipal Code
[Condition'al l.ises} is hereby amended to read:
18. 51. 050 Co;aditiorial uses. The follow-
ing uses may be conditionally allowed ln the GM(B)
district, subject to the issuance of a condi.': ional
use permit in a~cord with Chapter 18.90:
(a) Animal care, inclu;::iing boarding and
. kennels1 ·
{b) ~utomotive services;
( c) Commercial , ':."ecreation;
( d) . Eating and drinking services, except
'drive-in and take-out services1
te) General business services;
. (f) Temporary parking' f~ . .-;ilities, pro-
vided tnat suc::h 'fr:icilities shall remain no more
than five years.

ment regulations for continual use and occupancy by
the same use; provided that any such remodelin9,
improvement or replacement shall not result in
increased floor area, number of rooms, height,
length, or any other increase in the size of the

SECTION 4. This ordinance shall become effective upon the com
mencement of the thirty-first day after the date of its passage.
