Special Meeting
August 31, 2011
The City Council of the City of Palo Alto met on this date in the Council
Conference Room at 6:05 P.M.
Present: Burt, Espinosa, Holman, Klein, Price, Scharff, Schmid, Shepherd,
Yeh arrived @ 7:15 P.M.
Absent:
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Carol Garsten stated her concern for keeping the historic value of the Varsity
Theater. She asked the City Council to give the public an opportunity to
provide input on the future of the theater.
Kimberley Mixter spoke about her childhood memories of attending functions
as the Varsity Theater, and the need to make it a community gathering spot.
She agreed with the previous speaker that the City Council should get input from the public.
Mark Weiss thanked the City Council for the opportunity to speak out about
the future of the Varsity Theater. He felt that the theater could be used for
live music and theater performances, as well as a community gathering spot.
John Milton stated he wanted the City Council to resurrect the Varsity
Theater as a community center where there could be food, music, and live
performances.
Chris Watkins stated he was one of the last managers of the Varsity Theater
before it closed. He spoke about using the theater as a community center
and not to let the character of the building be eroded by using it as office or
retail space.

The City Council reconvened from the Closed Session at 9:20 P.M. and
Mayor Espinosa advised no reportable action.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 P.M.
