Hello,
I’ve already registered my comments on the survey that was not so readily publicized but to reiterate I am opposed
to the airport expansion.
I see the benefit to a relatively few and a real nuisance and environmental bad idea for the majority of residents in
Palo Alto and East Palo Alto.
Thank you,

Dear Sir or Madam,
It’s my understanding that the Palo Alto architectural review board will meet next week to consider converting thePalo Alto Square theater space to office space. I’m writing to oppose strongly this conversion. It’s myunderstanding that the city granted a variance to the development of those buildings to be higher than zoned inreturn for the developer/building owners allowing a theater space for the community at below-market-rent. Foryears, I enjoyed attending movies there. It’s a great space for a movie theater with ample parking in the eveningsand on the weekends and a central access. I used to ride my bike to matinees there. Please retain this space for thebenefit of the community. I hope another art movie theater company will lease the space again and run it as a movietheater. If there isn’t a vendor to run it as a movie theater, however, please use the space for other communitybenefit: as a community theater available for community groups to rent for performances. Also, I recall that yearsago the Palo Alto YMCA leased the space as a gym and ran exercise classes there. Perhaps it could be used for thatpurpose again.
The bottom line is that the deal the city made for the original development of those buildings should be honored andenforced: that space is for the community for below-market rent. I would love to see the move theater re-openthere!
Best Regards,
Karen Jacobson

Sirs/Madams:
I’ve read that Palo Alto’s Architectural Review Board is now considering converting Palo Alto Square Theater intooffice space. We certainly don’t need more office space in Palo Alto, with our surplus office accommodations.
What we do need in town, especially now that our community is fully engaged in in-person activities, is a theater—for films, stage productions and company events.
Bring back Palo Alto Square Theater!
Sincerely,
Susan Berman

Hello,
I would please ask that the city reopen the theater at Palo Alto Square, and NOT turn it into more unneeded office
space, especially when most recently, the Icon theater in Mt View was closed. Not everyone enjoys movies on their
phones or tvs, and the theater provides a great experience.

To Palo Alto City Council and the Architectural Review Board:
We strongly oppose turning the Palo Alto Square movie theatre into office
space or anything else. Since 1975 until Covid era, we frequented the CineArts
Theatre for movies, Saturday morning NYC Met Opera Simulcasts and other
events. It’s unthinkable to shutter this gem of a theatre. Do NOT approve this
senseless plan. The community does not need more office space!!

HELLO City of Palo Alto~
I am dismayed that the space for this great Theatre is considered for an office space complex.
PALO ALTO has been struggling for years with a VACANCY rate of 24% ; SILICON VALLEY is suffering aVACANCY rate of round 22 to24%; SAN FRANCISCO has a VACANCY rate of about 32.4%.I presume you want to add to that VACANCY DILEMMA , or do you purport to have a Crystal ball that sees it allgo away?
Let the Theatre reopen for the enjoyment and as a ‘centerpiece’ of the community!

Images: My Life in Film
In this new edition, Ingmar Bergman presents an intimate view of his own unique
body of work in film. His career spanned forty years and produced more than fifty
films, many of which are considered classics: The Seventh Seal, The Virgin Spring,
Persona, Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries, and Fanny and Alexander, to
name but a few. When he began this book, Bergman had not seen most of his movies
since he made them. Resorting to scripts and working notebooks, and especially to
memory, he comments brilliantly and always cogently on his failures as well as his
successes; on the themes that bind his work together; on his concerns, anxieties, and
moments of happiness; on the relationship between his life and art.

POLITICO: Reparations advocates play the long game
By Lindsey Holden
JUST GETTING STARTED: Advocates for slavery reparations are shifting away from a
conversation focused on cash payments and throwing their energy behind a slate of bills
meant to address hundreds of years of racial discrimination.
With one week left in the legislative session, at least eight bills are awaiting key floor votes.
Among them are proposals on eminent domain, prison book bans and anti-discrimination
measures dealing with hair texture and style.
“The way that we’ve done reparations in California is not about a check in the mail,”
said Lisa Holder, a member of the state’s reparations task force, which Gov. Gavin
Newsom formed in 2020. “It is so much deeper. That is one of five dimensions.”
Mindful of the state’s multibillion-dollar budget deficit, the Legislative Black Caucus chose to
launch the effort with proposals that have smaller price tags, including a letter of apology for
the harms caused by slavery and its legacy.
At least three have already cleared the Legislature. Newsom last month signed a bill from
Assemblymember Tina McKinnor to collect data by race for career technical education
programs.
Voters in November will consider a ban on involuntary servitude targeting forced prison
labor, following a legislative push from Assemblymember Lori Wilson. The governor last
month signed another bill from Wilson that would require the state Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation to create a voluntary work program if that ballot measure,
Proposition 6, passes.
Holder said she was pleased to see Newsom and legislative leaders commit $12 million in
budget funding to begin implementing reparations legislation.
“Just the act of putting money to begin to seed reparations legislation is historic,” she said.
But lawmakers behind these efforts have been candid about the headwinds they face, from
funding cutbacks to a lack of political will to spend taxpayer funds on such programs.
“This is a pretty good start,” said Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer, one of two
lawmakers who served on the task force. “But it also gives us an idea of what challenges we
have in the future, like dealing with the budget.”
The Los Angeles lawmaker, who is terming out this year, said his colleagues aim to keep
chipping away at the task force recommendations by taking up 15 to 20 per year.
“Most of them will have 10 years to get this completed,” he said, “and I think they would like
to get this done in half that time.”
Bills associated with criminal justice policy changes have had a harder time getting traction
as a tough-on-crime mood takes hold. A proposal from Jones-Sawyer to use savings from
prison closures to establish an anti-violence grant program died last week in the Senate
Appropriations Committee.
This week, Assemblymember Chris Holden announced he was dropping legislation that
would have restricted the state’s use of solitary confinement in prisons, jails and immigrant
detention centers.
“It shows you that we still have a lot of work to do to convince our colleagues that issues
such as solitary confinement need to be addressed in this country,” said state Sen. Steven
Bradford, who also served on the task force.
There were lawmakers “who didn’t even want to vote for the apology,” he added. “So it
speaks to where we are as a state and as a nation.”
