Not sure how PA airport can expand without infringing on the natural environment of the bay lands. It makes more
sense to use the golf links space if they need to expand. But why expand? Many things are better left untouched.

Hello,
I’m strongly against Palo Alto Airport expansion due to the myriad deleterious environmentalimpacts to air, water and quality of life in Palo Alto .
A needed change however is to assure a healthier diet for the ducks which will in turn improve
the water quality.
Sincerely,
Bette KiernanPalo Alto

The Problem with Feeding Ducks
No crackers for quackers — help keep waterfowl
healthy and wild!
Heading to the park to feed the ducks is a very old and popular family pasime;
it’s a fun, free activity and a great way for parents and children to see and
appreciate wildlife and nature.
What many people don't realize is that bread, rolls, chips, and other human
"snack food" items do not ofer the proper nutrition that ducks and geese need
— and that the act of feeding a diet heavy in bread and other empty
carbohydrates can lead to severe health consequences and a variety of other
problems.
Nutritional Consequences
Wild ducks and geese feed on a variety of grains and grasses, aquatic plants,
and invertebrates, all naturally found in the wild. When eaten in combination,
these foods are nutritionally balanced and provide everything a wild duck or
goose needs to survive.
In contras, foods commonly fed to waterfowl in public parks, such as bread,
crackers, popcorn, and corn, are typically low in protein and essential nutrients
and minerals (such as calcium and phosphorus). While a single feeding of these
“junk foods” may not harm waterfowl, it adds up! If everyone visiting a park
“only” gives a few pieces of bread or crackers to ducks and geese, it quickly
becomes the bulk of what wild waterfowl consume, and results in a variety of
nutritional disorders.
Waterfowl in public parks are often admitted to wildlife rehabilitation centers
with metabolic bone disease (MBD). Birds with MBD have incredibly soft
bones and joints that are often malformed and fractured; these injuries are
caused by an overall calcium defciency in the body, which is linked to an
inappropriate diet. Calcium also plays a crucial role in the formation of
eggs/ofspring, clotting ability, cardiovascular and neuromuscular function, and
a variety of other metabolic activities. Birds with MBD are often so malformed
they cannot fy and become dependent on handouts, completing a vicious cycle.
Afected birds are typically too weak to compete for food and defend
themselves and are often the victims of aggressive attacks by other ducks and
geese.
Another common issue with ducks and geese in public parks is “angel wing”—
a condition where the ends of an afected bird’s fight feathers are twised
upward. “Angel wing” occurs when ducks and geese grow abnormally quickly;
the afected birds’ joints don’t fully form as the wing and feathers develop and
the weight of the growing feathers rotates the tip of the bird’s wing. If caught in
the initial sages, waterfowl sufering from this condition may be treated with
splints to guide bone growth in the correct position. Although there are several
theories regarding the causes of “angel wing”, some sudies sugges that diets
high in protein may be to blame. Well-meaning citizens feeding commercial
duck, chicken, or turkey feed to avoid the “junk food” may be unintentionally
creating this disorder.
One more problem with bread products is that this type of food expands in
water—and the somach—which gives ducks and geese an artifcial feeling that
they are full. As a result, these birds may not feel motivated to continue
foraging on natural foods of higher nutritional value.
Overcrowding & Disease
In the wild, a particular lake or pond habitat can susain a certain number of
ducks and/or geese – there is a maximum number of individuals that can
successfully reside there indefnitely, with enough food, water, and shelter. This
“carrying capacity” of the habitat can be artifcially increased when
supplemental food is added.
While extra food may appear to be a good thing, it may lead to an expanded
waterfowl population beyond the carrying capacity of the habitat. Without
increasing space and other resources, ducks and geese can become sressed and
overcrowded. Increased numbers of animals leads to increased competition for
food; weaker birds in these environments often susain severe injuries from
more dominant birds. During the spring breeding season, gangs of male ducks
physically attack each other to get access to female ducks. This not only leads
to plucked featherless areas and skin lacerations, but females often drown as
they cannot escape the driven males. Females that manage to escape the male
ducks often nes up to a mile away from the water. This abnormal nesing
behavior may put them at risk of urban predators, vehicle collisions, and perils
not associated with nesing in natural areas.
Overcrowded habitats also are prime territories for disease outbreaks; there
have been numerous outbreaks of botulism, avian cholera, duck plague (duck
enteritis virus), and aspergillosis (fungal infection) in city duck ponds where
supplemental feeding is a regular activity. The intense competition for poor-
quality food combined with other sressful interactions often causes the ducks
and geese to have suppressed immune sysems, which reduces their ability to
resis infection.
For areas with high volumes of supplemental feeding, it’s also quite common
for the unconsumed, leftover food to attract scavengers, including raccoons,
opossums, and rats. Dense populations of these scavengers bring the potential
for further disease outbreak, including zoonotic diseases that are transmissible
to humans.
Habitat Degradation
There are also environmental issues related to artifcially increasing the number
of ducks and geese in a given area. Large numbers of waterfowl in a small area
can seriously impact the surrounding environment.
Feces generated by overcrowded waterfowl result in increased deposition of
carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen in the water and surrounding grasslands. The
addition of these nutrients to water (a process known as eutrophication)
promotes excessive algae growth, leading to decreased oxygen levels, foul-
smelling green and cloudy water, fsh kills, and an overall decrease in water
quality. Some common algae species (blue-green algae) even produce toxins
associated with illness in wildlife, humans, and pets.
Certain species of waterfowl may also be desructive to the environment, due to
their natural foraging srategies. Canada geese graze on grass and other low-
growing plants and, when in large focks, often desroy lawns and gardens
surrounding city ponds. If these birds cannot fnd enough food, they often
migrate short disances to golf courses, sports felds, and other grassy public
areas yet sill use the public park as a “home base”. Increased waterfowl
populations can also lead to erosion of shorelines and a general negative public
opinion of ducks and geese.
Habituation
In the wild, a healthy fear of humans and other potential predators allows ducks
and geese to survive and reproduce. In public settings where waterfowl are fed
artifcial diets, these birds often lose this fear and are more likely to be
consumed by predators (feral cats, dogs, foxes, raccoons, etc). Urban waterfowl
may also be more likely to be hit by vehicles, entangled in litter, and
maliciously harmed by humans. Habituated geese can pose a signifcant public
health threat at certain times of the year if they are defending a nesing female
or a brood of goslings. These habituated geese have the ability to seriously hurt
humans, particularly children.
What You Can Do
Allowing ducks and geese to fnd their own wild, nutritionally balanced diet is
bes—for the health of waterfowl and the surrounding environment.
For those who would like to sop feeding waterfowl slowly: the leas
problematic foods mimic the waterfowl’s natural diet—greens and insects.
Chopped-up greens (kale, collards, dandelions (only from pesicide-free yards))
are more nutritious than any junk food, including corn. Ducks and geese eat
insects too—so a special treat of mealworms or freeze-dried crickets would
also likely be enjoyed! But the bottom line is that wild ducks and geese should
be able to fnd plenty of food on their own, so if you can resis the temptation to
feed, simply pack your binoculars and camera and enjoy watching the birds.

Attention:
I am not sure what's going on with the kids in foster and adoption care systems across the stateof Kentucky for the time period of 55 years getting released from state child custody welfare
systems and reunited with biological family members directly from state hospitals and checcedout of state custody and reunited with biological family members custody immediately upon
release from the state hospital they go to.
Or what you guys are doing about the large homeless population you have here in Lexingtonand throughout the state of Kentucky but I accessed housing money for the state of Kentucky
sense 2019-2020 we my teachers from Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids IA Mrs AprilDirks and Mrs Joni Howland and I have accessed millions of dollars to house this homeless
population and they are still not housed.
When I accessed this housing money I accessed it to get housed myself and to house the restof your homeless people here in the state. As well as to bring you new programs to the state of
Kentucky including one like the KPACE Program in Cedar Rapids IA I went through to getmy GED and education for degrees I am in the process still of getting from Kirkwood
Community College to Mount Mercy University going from an AA Degree in Liberal Artswith a minor in psychology and 1/2 of 72 credits towards a BA in social work with a minor in
psychology. I will continue to get my degrees after I get paid and can return home to do so.
Today, let's go get these kids out safely right now. Remember starting at threat levels due tokids severity and levels of abuse and us parents involvement in working in or for the guilty
state or finding the state guilty. Like yours or mine. LaTray DeShunn Ellis Stevenson 8 24 12and Kimyona Grace Ellis Luke 7 12 15 in foster and adoption care my biological children and
a large group of your kids in state child custody welfare systems getting them out safe as fastas you can then you get the rest out safely starting with the last child taken into state child
custody welfare systems MOVING BACCWARDS IN THE TIME PERIOD OF 55YEARS!!! Get all our kids out safely!!!
I am trying to get you to incorperation job programs like liccing stamps for the elderly or those
who can't do hard work. 250-500 a week for a weekly or daily checc. However it works. Forthose on SSI and our elderly.
I want a ,daily "jobs corps" that reaches out to teach you other jobs.
I want a "workforce development center" that teaches you how to dress for success and access
to goodwill tickets whenever required. That helps you right a resume and how to do interviewsand fill out application or sign you up for education and stuff like that.
I want ways the homeless population can work to success in life and being able to afford there
own rent and provide extra income to those who get lower income due to lacc of obtaining aneducation by giving these people who are oppressed due to the lacc of education the education
they need to succeed. Including in your local community in the local offices someone to teachhow to access a federal investigation. When you access a federal investigation. What you
access a federal investigation for and how to access a federal investigation going on in thisstate to teach these individuals how to access the help they need here. Please incorporate this
into places like the nest. The day center, the light house, places like that.
Start telling the kids how and when to access a federal investigation at a younger age then highschool.. tell it at the time we start to tell em about how to access 911. When 911 don't work
access the FBI and Interpol police officers. That is exactly what we might need to tell em!

DeShunn Ellis 8 24 12 and Kimyona Grace Ellis 7 12 15 at birth in Cedar Rapids IA. One atSt. Luke's or both at Mercy hospital. They were born. Taken away at UK Good Samaritan
Hospital here in Lexington Kentucky February 2nd of 2019 & I've been fighting sense to dothese full link emails. Or the investigation to find the state guilty and get legislation to pass
through federal and state level courts systems.
I thought when I did this email claim I've done enough all a mom should have to to get herkids bacc from state child custody welfare systems and reunited with biological family
members custody as federal law requirements requires all guilty states of our nation but now Ireally feel i have done more thrn any mom should have to do to get my kids LaTray and
Kimyona Ellis out of state custody and reunited with biological family members as federal lawrequirements requires all guilty states of our nation. So, please help me get them and everyone
else kids in foster and adoption care systems out of state custody for the time period of 55years.

Exactly why is the City of Palo Alto considering an expansion of the airport. Who is thisserving? A better question is why maintain an airport at all? Like the old marina, maybe the
land would be better used as a wetland for future flood control.

Dear Council,
You have probably heard about recent rulings from the Supreme Court on various issues
cutting federal agency power including a revised statute of limitations for challenginggovernment regulations, and the end of Chevron deference.
I realize that the rulings are in the eye of the beholder. For those of us who follow aviation
noise, it's no loss to see a new dynamic to work towards balance because neither the FAA,EPA, or Congress have been proactive enough to protect people from aviation noise. This
week's Airport Noise Report covered Chevron deference; it includes comments from PeterKirsch (the city's aviation counsel), and my take on the implications for how the FAA carries
out NEPA. The ANR issue also has coverage of a paper from Palo Alto residents on havingvalid metrics to evaluate potential impacts from FAA actions.
Furthermore, the SFO Roundtable announced today that the Metroplex Overflight Noise
Analysis (MONA) team from Stanford University is on the agenda for their July 16
meeting at 3:30 pm regarding MONA's validation study of AEDT. AEDT is the tool that
the FAA uses to estimate potential aviation noise impacts for regulatory purposes.
I suggest that all of the above topics are important to capture what citizens are trying
to convey about concerns with aircraft noise governance and hope that you will take
interest. Thanks,
Jennifer

To whom it may concern, the recent inquiry of the Palo Alto airport to fill in the reserved duckpond to expand its airport is a ludicrous and inhumane effort to increase profit at the expense
of the natural wildlife minutes from its borders. As a resident of Palo Alto and a frequent guestto the duck pond, I request a firm denial of the airports expansion.
The enjoyment of the people and the sanctuary of the animals are infinitely more important
than a strip of concrete padding the wallets of a select few who couldn't care less about whattheir surrounding residents want, their well being, or the long standing private history of the
site.
I see benches marked with the names and dates of mothers, fathers, grandmothers andgrandfathers, people who have come and gone and enjoyed the sights of the parks. Their
memories shouldn't vanish with them. I want my children to enjoy the scenery as I have, uninterrupted. There are other airports, already up to code and with far more equipped to
consider.
No traveler would choose the airport which is actively destroying what makes the communitygreat.

To whom it may concern,
I have recently heard that the private Plato Alto airport wants the Duck Pond filled in so they can expand their
airport. This is absolutely a terrible idea. The duck pond is a vital part of the community not only for the people, but
more importantly for the natural
wildlife of our city.
As a member of our community, I am highly against this notion. I hope the city council isn’t so corrupt to cater to a
private airport and its investors. We must represent the voices who cannot speak for the preservation of their homes.

City Council Members:
I found filling out the Palo Alto Airport survey difficult because it didn't allow for any
differing opinions from the 5 alternatives. Because when filling out the survey, I did not
choose a given option, my survey was not submitted and was considered incomplete. I
would like to eliminate the airport altogether as there are already enough airports in the
area and the noise from the current airport as well as the inevitable air pollution reduce
the quality of life in Palo Alto to the benefit of only a few residents.
If eliminating the airport is not an option, I would like to go on record as choosing Option
#1 to do nothing.
Most sincerely,

Hello Dr. Newman,
Thank you for your email. I have cc’d the official City Council and City Manager email addresses to
ensure they receive your note and concerns about the CalTrans ECR bike lane project, directly.
City Council did hear similar concerns when this project was presented last month, on June 18th.
Here is a link to the agenda and record of that meeting:
https://cityofpaloalto.primegov.com/portal/item/5389 Council voted at that time to support the
project and the removal of the parking spaces along ECR.
Staff received direction to mitigate impacts as possible by taking next steps to allow some number of
employee permit parkers currently assigned to Zone G to again make use again of the zones within
the Evergreen Park-Mayfield RPP, and to also work with ECR businesses to identify options for new
curb designations just off of ECR for loading or short term parking prioritization, as agreed upon
adjacent business owners.
Let me know if you or others would like to meet soon to discuss possible next steps regarding these

Dear Nathan,
Following up here, about our questions.
As mentioned there is already a two way BIKE LANE FROM STANFORD AVE ALL THE WAY TO
GALVEZ/EMBARCADERO.
THIs bike lane is paved, protected from el camino and used by cyclist infrequently.
So the big question to CALTRANS and CITY COUNCIL, Why do we need a double bike lane
along el camino when there is already a protected bike lane from Stanford AVe all the way to
Galvez.
If Caltrans is concerned about safety, why would the tempt cyclist to ride in an unprotected
area along el camino. There is no good reason to remove the street parking on El Camino in
our opinion.
Please make sure caltrans is aware and stop the unnecessary expense and liability of creating
a duplicative bike lane along El Camino .
Please confirm you received this message and will pass it along to the City Council of Palo Alto.
Best regards,
Dr. Newman , Dr Bjelajac and over 500 of our concerned patients who visit 1795 El Camino
monthly.

Hi Nathan,
It was impossible with such short notice to get comments and input from our local businesses
at 1795 El Camino regarding that meeting.
I was disappointed that the city council made a motion to favor removal of on street parking
along el camino without input from local businesses which I am sure you will now start to get
feedback.
As there is already a safe bike lane on the west side of el camino from our block, is our section
of el camino slated for an impact of our street parking?? Caltrans has three lanes in each
direction along our stretch and our on street parking does not encroach on their lanes.
Where is the boundary of caltrans property as it relates to city of palo alto parking along our
building?? I hope the city is not planning on giving away our valuable on street parking along
our block.
We all need to be able to give ample feedback to Palo Alto city council and this last minute
change in plans did not afford our voices to be taken into account. We would appreciate at
least some answers to the couple of questions raised in this brief email.
Thank you,
James

This is a BAD idea. Do the right thing and leave the duck poind alone! Susan Wyle

Tips for finding the perfect book for your child
Tips for finding the perfect book for your child
Hello parents and guardians! I would like to share some handy dandy tips on finding the
perfect book for your child to read over summer break! First of all, keep the age of your
child in mind: how advanced they are at comprehending books. This is important while
finding their special Goldilocks books-not too hard; just the right difficulty! An easy way to
find their reading level is to read the first few pages of a book recommended for your
child's age. If your child is very confused, it's too hard. If they get most of it, then it's just
right. If they complain it's too easy, well, then it's just too easy. Next, genre; knowing
what genres your kid enjoys will make sure they won't get bored. To find out what types of
stories they like is really easy: just ask! If they don't know, then let them sample some
books of different genres. Finally, the most important part: read my book reviews in the
monthly FOPAL newsletter!
Good luck!

My daughter loved that pond, and we don’t really have any others.
The duck pond is a migratory center for waterfowl. They nest and raise hatchlings there.
The whole area is a wild bird refuge, and marshlands we need to keep as marshlands.
Please leave the pond as it is, and do not allow the airport to expand more into our wetland areas! It is noisy enough
around here!

Developers have submitted building plans for a very large building of mixed usage on University Avenueand Byron Street,
a very busy street with a lot of constant traffic. This area since I first moved there in 1987, 37 years ago has
been a professional area
with attorneys, dentists, psychiatrists, other therapists and senior residents. This very vast construction will
totally change the ambiance of
this area.
Their intent is for the building to have many studio apartments with balconies, and many offices. It was
only a few years ago that
we were told that Palo Alto has enough offices, and there are still vacancies in the down town area. There
are also plans for several large residential buildings in other areas of Palo Alto. 20 % of these apartments
are to be affordable. Who will monitor this?
This large a building is not necessary in this area. It is much too large for this down town location.
Please consider the persons who are already working and living in that area, and please do the right thing
and vote against such a large building.
Thank you,
Faith W. Brigel

Good luck!

Dear Palo Alto City Council,
The private Palo Alto airport is requesting that the Duck Pond be closed and filled in. I hope that you will vote thisdown. They want to expand their airport into the Duck Pond. This would allow more and larger airplanes to travel toand from this airport near Embarcadero. Many of us love walking in the Duck Pond. I do not want a larger airport for a few. I do not want more airplaneowners from Palo Alto, Atherton, Woodside, Hillsborough, and San Mateo flying into the area of the Duck Pond.I request that you keep the Duck Pond as it is and has been for many years.
Thank you for your consideration.

We marched! Casey summarized it best: It makes me feel purposeful and seen! Rick deployed a tactic that encouraged interaction withpassersby – raising a fist in the air. He got lots of responses! Karen enjoyed hearing applause from seated diners we passed. Amy introducedus to a terrific chant: Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Meat and dairy’s got to go! George relished turning our message signs – CLIMATE ACTION ISLOVE #ACTNOW – towards workers and customers in the Apple Store as we chanted, “What do we want? Climate action! When do wewant it? NOW!” We were walking the walk and chanting the talk! Great job everybody! After the march, entrepreneur David joined us and shared news of a geothermal power generation system that he developed and is prototypingin Iceland. Geothermal energy is a terrific source of nearly infinite, inexpensive, clean, renewable energy that works continuously day ornight, wind or no wind, delivering smooth, continuous baseload power to the grid. Keep up the great work, David, and keep us posted onprogress!
Rick was interviewed on the Earth Day Everyday Podcast where he shared his journey into becoming a climate activist and influencer. Check it out here. Thanks, Rick, for sharing your experience and enthusiasm! Angel was also interviewed and raised awareness on the top 3 individual contributions to environmental collapse which she cleverly calls,“CCC – Cars, Cows and Cups (plastic).” Meanwhile Rick reminds us of Gustave Speth’s top 3, “GAS – Greed, Apathy andSelfishness.” Yes, and yes. Thanks to you both for raising awareness of all these contributions! Matt continues working with a California construction industry association to develop a mission statement for a sustainability task force thatwill influence the direction of the construction industry’s impact on climate change and its commitment to mitigation and resiliency. He’slooking forward to sharing the statement soon. Roger at Spiritual Life Foundation has started delivering a climate message to their members every Friday. The first message was ourmonthly march message sharing how climate action is an act of love. Also, he expressed shock that temperatures in Fresno, where he oncelived, have been over 110 degrees so many days this year. Climate change has arrived. Thanks, Roger, for preparing SLF members, mentallyand spiritually, for the dramatic changes that are upon us. Looking forward to hearing more exciting news from our members about all the loving climate actions they are taking!
Keep Up the Fight and See You Friday!

To all-
NYT: You don't want Covid, even now. I got a Covid booster in June, 2024 atKaiser. My seventh Covid shot. They say to get another one in fall, 2024: If you made it
through all of 2020 without getting Covid you were doing something right. I left my gym inFebruary, 2020. Never got Covid. The first Covid vaccine became available in January, 2021.
We were all vulnerable during 2020. Remember those freezer trucks in NYC to hold all of thebodies? Every day I take Vit. D3 and Vit. K2, the MK7 version of Vit. K2. Dirt cheap on
Amazon. These protect against Covid. The Vit. K2 will put the Ca in your blood into yourbones and keep it out of your artery walls and your kidneys. Dr. John Campbell in the UK,
Ph.D in Nursing, made lots of vids on YouTube recommending these. Probably still is. Seesome of those.
