HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-08-20 Public Art Commission Summary Minutes MINUTES PUBLIC ART COMMISSION MEETING Thursday, August 20, 2020 Virtual teleconference via Zoom 7:00 p.m. Commissioners Present: Ben Miyaji, Loren Gordon, Nia Taylor, Hsinya Shen, Amanda Ross Commissioners Absent: Jim Migdal, Ian Klaus Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director Nadya Chuprina, Public Art Program Coordinator CALL TO ORDER: Chair Miyaji called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – None APPROVAL OF MINUTES: July 16, 2020 PAC Meeting Minutes Moved: Vice Chair Gordon; Second: Commissioner Shen. Abstained: Commissioner Ross. Motion passed. STAFF COMMENTS: Staff provided an update on the completed recruitment call for the Public Art Commission with the submission deadline closed on July 21 and interviews scheduled for the end of August. Staff announced a new temporary installation by Paz de la Calzada and shared images of the artwork installed in King Plaza in front of City Hall. Staff also announced the completed virtual community outreach and engagement via coUrbanize and encouraged commissioners and members of community to continue providing input regarding the future of public art in the California Ave district via the Public Art Program social media and by attending a virtual community meeting via Zoom on September 9. Staff reported on the recent virtual meeting with Code:ART2 teams who presented their projects and discussed ideas for best ways to build their prototypes. ACTION: 1. Collection Care –Staff recommended that the Commission approve funds in the amount of $3,800 for the annual preventative maintenance treatment of the water sculpture titled Confluence by artist Michael Szabo. The treatment will include thorough cleaning of the fountain surfaces from mineral buildup, touch-ups of patina, and water flow adjustment. Additionally, the artist will coordinate with the city and its maintenance contractor on appropriate levels of chlorine added to the water. Moved: Commissioner Ross moved to approve funding for the maintenance project. Second: Commissioner Shen. All in Favor. NON-ACTION: 2. PAC Annual Retreat – Staff and PAC Chair led a discussion regarding the upcoming PAC annual retreat. The Commissioners discussed the retreat agenda and suggested to focus the retreat among annual topics on an in-depth study of the public art program funding sources and budget overview, impact of the possible suspension of the Percent for Art ordinances, funding priorities for the projects and programing for the next two years, programming ideas for temporary public art, and the interim status report on the California Ave Public Art Master Plan. The retreat would take place via remote teleconferencing prior to the regular PAC meeting on September 17 and exact date will be announced separately. ANNOUNCEMENTS – Chair Miyaji on behalf of the Public Art Commission thanked Commissioner Ross for her nine years of service on the Commission and recognized her dedication, hard work and many contributions to the achievements of public art in Palo Alto.
