HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-19 Public Art Commission Summary Minutes MINUTES PUBLIC ART COMMISSIONMEETING Thursday, April 19, 2018 Palo Alto City Hall Community Meeting Room 7:00 p.m. Commissioners Present: Jim Migdal, Ben Miyaji, Hsinya Shen, Nia Taylor, Loren Gordon, Mila Zelkha arrived at 7:05 Commissioners Absent: Amanda Ross Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director Nadya Chuprina, Public Art Program Coordinator Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne, interim Director of Community Services CALL TO ORDER: Chair Migdal called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – Chair Migdal rested to move the Non-Action Item 3 to be presented to the PAC first. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – David Carnahan, Assistant City Clerk made an announcement about the ongoing recruitment process for the Historic Recourses Board and Human Relations Commission. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: March 15, 2018 PAC Regular Meeting Minutes Moved: Ben Miyaji; Second: Jim Migdal; All in favor. STAFF COMMENTS: Staff announced that the recruitment for the Public Art Commission was completed with interviews scheduled for April 24th. Staff made an announcement about the application opportunity for the Palo Alto Housing Art Contest. Staff invited the Commissioners to attend the Meet the Artist event with Toby Fraley to conclusion of the Artwork Forge temporary installation in King Plaza on April 25, noon – 2 pm. Staff also updated the Commission on the ongoing volunteer recruitment to help artist Konstantin Dimopoulos install his Blue Trees project in King Plaza during May 14 – 18, and an opening event with the artist talk, reception and live music on May 16, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Staff reported on the completion of landscape and irrigation works for the area surrounding Nude in Steel as well as its maintenance treatment to fix broken welds, remove rust, and recoat the sculpture. Staff introduced Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne, interim Director of the Community Services Department and Director of Library Services. Le Conge Ziesenhenne spoke about her current role and previous professional experience. NON-ACTION: 3. Stanford Hospital Public Art –Connie Wolf, consulting program director for Stanford Hospital made a presentation about the exterior public art program for the new hospital. The new projects scheduled to be installed prior to the hospital opening in late 2019 include artworks by Leo Villareal, Deborah Butterfield, Robert Indiana, Hung Yi, Fletcher Benton, Don Yeomans, Bruce Nauman, and Ned Kahn. ACTION: 1. Acquisition of artwork – Staff presented an artwork titled The Architect by Cubberley artist Marianne Lettieri offered by the artist as a gift to the City of Palo Alto’s public art collection. Moved: Commissioner Gordon moved to approve the acquisition and accept the donation of the artwork to the City collection. Second: Vice Chair Miyaji. All in Favor. 2. Highway 101 Bike and Pedestrian Bridge – Staff presented the background for the overall bridge construction project, artist Mary Lucking’s conceptual proposal for the integrated public art project including three seating elements and railing. Staff requested allocation of additional funding in the amount of $10,000 to fund the artist designed railing to be fabricated in a durable steel compatible with the marine environment. Moved: Commissioner Shen moved to approve the allocation of funds for the railing. Second: Vice Chair Miyaji. All in Favor. ANNOUNCEMENTS – Staff announced the upcoming Silicon Valley Open Studio event with seven participating CASP artists over the weekend of May 5-6, 2018.
