HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-12 Public Art Commission Summary Minutes MINUTES PUBLIC ART COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING Thursday, June 12, 2017 City Hall Council Chambers 250 Hamilton Ave 12:06 p.m. Commissioners Present: Jim Migdal, Ben Miyaji, Loren Gordon, and Hsinya Shen. Commissioners Absent: Mila Zelkha, Amanda Ross and Nia Taylor Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director Nadya Chuprina, Public Art Program Coordinator Liz Kniss, City Council Liaison CALL TO ORDER: Chair Migdal called the meeting to order at 12:06 p.m. AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – none. ACTION: 1. Fire Station 3 –Staff provided an overview of the construction project of the new fire station, artist selection process for the project, samples of Beeman’s previous commissions, design development process, and presented slides with site drawings featuring the future location of the proposed artwork as well as dimensioned renderings of the artworks. Artist Pete Beeman was approved for the project in September 2016. Staff held an intake meeting with the artist, the design team, and key stakeholders to inform the design development process. The input from the meeting was that there was general support for creating a functional artwork that would include kinetic elements. Staff also reported that the Fire Department was fully supportive of the design. Staff clarified Commissioners’ questions about the symbolism behind the proposed design of a kinetic bench and ensured that the artist took into considerations issues around climability and safety standards. Staff recommended that the Public Art Commission approve the artwork concept design and authorize the artist to begin the engineering and fabrication phase. Moved: Vice Chair Miyaji moved to approve proposed concept design. Second: Chair Migdal. All in Favor. ANNOUNCEMENTS – none.
