HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-10-20 Public Art Commission Summary Minutes MINUTES PUBLIC ART COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING Thursday, October 20, 2016 City Hall Community Meeting Room 250 Hamilton Ave 7:18 p.m. Commissioners Present: Loren Gordon, Mila Zelkha, Jim Migdal, and Nia Taylor Commissioners Absent: Dara Silverstein, Ben Miyaji, and Amanda Ross, Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director Amy Johnson, Program Assistant II CALL TO ORDER: Chair, Migdal called the meeting to order at 7:18 p.m. AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – Staff requested item 2 be removed because Commissioner Zelkha is planning to recuse herself from the discussion, and there would not be a quorum to take action. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - none. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: September 15, 2016 PAC Regular Meeting Minutes Moved: Loren Gordon, Second: Jim Migdal. All in favor. STAFF COMMENTS: Staff reported on the artist development event with Erica Behrens of Franz Mayer of Munich. There were about 15 artists in attendance, and more than 40 examples shown around the world. Staff also reported that the new installation by Patrick Dougherty will begin on October 31st and will take approximately 3 weeks to build. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY: Aaron Lee Benson introduced his family (wife and children), who were all part of the build team for the project The Running Wall, that has just been completed on King Plaza. He gave a brief presentation of his past installations and answered Commissioner questions. ACTION: Truth Booth – Staff shared information and a video about the Truth Booth by Cause Collective, which is touringall 50 states. Staff recommended hosting the Truth Booth here in Palo Alto, on King Plaza this spring. Staff answered questions about marketing for the booth, and whether other locations would be better to allow for more diversity of visitors to the booth. Commissioners made suggestions for optimal times and considerations to maximize the diversity of the audience coming to see the artwork at King Plaza. Moved: Commissioner Zelkha moved to have staff secure the Truth Booth for a one-installation on King Plaza, in the spring, at the cost of $5,000.00. Second: Chair Migdal. All in Favor.
