PUBLIC ART COMMISSION

Commissioners Absent: Jim Migdal
Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director
CALL TO ORDER: Vice-Chair Miyaji called the meeting to order at 7:08p.m.
AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – none
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS- none
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: July 23, 2015 Moved as Corrected: Commissioner Silverstein, Second:
Commissioner Gordon. All in favor.
STAFF COMMENTS:
Staff gave an update on Mobile Arts Platform and their upcoming events, an update on the timeline of
events for the new public art on King Plaza, and announced the Mayor’s Meet the Street event October
8th.
ACTION:
1. 180 El Camino Real - Commissioner Silverstein recused herself from the item due to her
employment with Stanford University. Chandra Cerrito of Chandra Cerrito Art Advisors gave an
overview of the art selection process that led to commissioning artist Brad Howe for the project.
Howe gave a presentation of his final art proposals for the site, Qualia and Semillas. There was
some discussion of the playful nature of the work and the role they may play in wayfinding. PAC
raised some concerns regarding the climbability of the sculptures and how hot they may get in the
sun. Moved: To approve the final art plan Ben Miyaji, 6 in Favor. Motion approved.
2. 430 Forest Avenue – Presentation of the project by project architect David Solnick and project
artist Yoshikawa on the final art plan for the project. The Commission asked questions about the
material, durability and coatings on the sculpture. Commissioner Silverstein participated in the
discussion, but had to leave the meeting at 8:00 p.m. and did not participate in the vote. Moved:
Commissioner Zelkha moved that the PAC approve the project as presented. Second:
Commissioner Ross. All in Favor. Motion approved.
3. Permanent Collection Condition Survey – Staff discussed the first completed phase of the
collection evaluation by ARG Conservation Services and requested $12,581 for the next phase of
the evaluation for all of the remaining permanently sited sculptures in the collection. Moved:
Vice-Chair Miyaji moved that the PAC approve the funds for the next phase of the collection
evaluation. Second: Commissioner Zelkha. All in Favor. Motion approved.
NON-ACTION:
4. Comprehensive Plan – Update by staff and discussion about the updates currently underway on
the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Staff will follow up with information about the upcoming
Comprehensive Plan meetings and the digital commenter link.
5. Retreat – Discussion of the outcomes of the retreat held September 11th at the Rinconada
Library.
