Ben Miyaji, Amanda Ross, Dara Silverstein Commissioners Absent: Vikki Tobak, Nia Taylor, Kathleen Kavanaugh Staff present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director CALL TO ORDER – The meeting was called to order at 7:25 PM by Chair Migdal. ADDITIONS, CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – None. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – Moved: Commissioner Kavanaugh moved to approve the March, 16 2015 Moved: Vice Chair Miyaji. Second: Chair Migdal. All in Favor. FINANCIAL REPORT – DeMarzo provided a report on the CIP budget. STAFF COMMENTS – Staff Liaison DeMarzo announced that the candidates for the Public Art Commission were interviewed Wednesday, April 15th. Five candidates interviewed and the Council will select new Commissioners Monday, May 4th. DeMarzo also announced the launch of the Public Art Program facebook page and encouraged the Commissioners to spread the word to their networks. DeMarzo also announced that a new base has been poured for Movement IV in front of Lucie Stern Community Center. The artwork has been repainted and will be replaced in the next ten days. DeMarzo introduced the new Director of the Community Services Department, Rob DeGeus. DeGeus briefly addressed the commission. ACTION 1. Permanent Collection Condition Survey - Staff outlined the history of maintenance efforts for the collection and the plan to evaluate the condition of the outdoor collection in order to formulate a long range plan and schedule for the care and keeping of the collection. Staff outlined the scope of work for the evaluation of fifteen permanently sited artworks in the collection. Five conservators were contacted to submit qualifications and proposals for the evaluation. Staff recommended the approval of ARG Conservation for a contract up to $7,200 for the evaluation reports on fifteen of the artworks. Moved: Ben Miyaji. Second: Amanda Beard Ross. All in favor. Motion approved. 2. Acquisition of Artwork - The Commission reviewed the two artworks by artist Joseph Zirker offered to the City by Karen Jo Koonan. Staff recommended the Commission accept the donation of the artwork into the City collection. Moved: Amanda Beard Ross. Second: Nia Taylor. All in favor. Motion Approved. 3. 3421-3431 Hillview Avenue - Final review of artwork by Daniel Winterich for the VMWare campus. The artist presented the artwork to the Commission for review. The Commission asked the applicants to confirm the ADA compliance of the sculpture and explore the climbability and safety concerns for kids and skateboards. Moved: Nia Taylor. Second: Ben Miyaji. All in Favor. Motion Approved. NON-ACTION 4. Public Art Master Plan Update - Barbara Goldstein gave an update on the master planning process and the meetings that have taken place to date. There was brief discussion regarding whether future art might help address some of the social and emotional issues the community is struggling with. The Commission also brought up the utility boxes, vacant storefronts, and construction mitigation as prime opportunities to integrate artwork. Staff distributed the tentative list of Master Plan Advisory Committee members to the Commission for comment. The Commission requested that a youth representative be appointed to the Committee. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioners requested that Staff address summer calendaring of meetings at the May 21st PAC meeting.
