FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
October 5-11, 2025 WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in, working
in, and visiting the community; and
WHEREAS, lithium-ion battery fires are on the rise and are primarily caused by thermal runaway, a chain reaction
triggered by damage, overcharging, or manufacturing defects. Micromobility devices like e-bikes, scooters, laptops
and cellphones are frequently involved in fires; and
WHEREAS, all household members should develop and practice a home fire safety and escape plan that includes:
buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely; having two exits from every room in the home with a path
to the outside from exits; installing smoke alarms in all required locations; and designating a meeting place outside
where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto Fire Department first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of
home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and education; and
WHEREAS, City of Palo Alto residents are encouraged to participate in public education measures, so that they
can take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”
effectively serves to educate the public about simple but important steps they can take to help reduce the risk of lithium-
ion battery fires, keeping themselves and those around them safe.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Ed Lauing, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council, do
hereby proclaim October 5-11, 2025 as Fire Prevention Week in the City of Palo Alto, and urge all community members
to participate in the public safety activities and efforts of the City of Palo Alto Fire and Emergency Services
Departments during Fire Prevention Week.
