HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-02-28 Ramadan RECOGNIZING RAMADAN IN PALO ALTO WHEREAS, Ramadan is a special month of community, fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims around the world, marking a time for spiritual reflection and growth, self-discipline, acts of charity, and communal harmony; and WHEREAS, Ramadan is a time for Muslims in Palo Alto and beyond to come together with family, friends, and neighbors to share meals and build stronger bonds within their communities; and WHEREAS, the observance of Ramadan enriches the cultural and spiritual fabric of our city, reflecting the values of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect that we hold dear; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto celebrates its Muslim residents and acknowledges their contributions to the social, economic, and cultural vitality of our community; and WHEREAS, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar (a lunar calendar) and the exact dates of Ramadan change every year; this year, Ramadan will begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, and will conclude on the evening of Sunday, March 30, 2025; the end of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid al-Fitr; and WHEREAS, the principles of Ramadan—compassion, generosity, and community—resonate universally and serve as an inspiration for all residents to work together towards greater harmony, inclusion, and belonging. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ed Lauing, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby proclaim the period of Ramadan 2025, from the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, to the evening of Sunday, March 30, 2025, as “Ramadan in Palo Alto.” I encourage all residents to join in recognizing this special time of reflection and community, and to honor the contributions of our Muslim neighbors, fostering understanding and connection across all cultures and traditions.
